Do you need to act like a man to succeed?
Reflecting gender imbalance in the workplace, highly feminised industries in the US have been branded ‘pink ghettos’. And although you may not be familiar with the term it’s likely you’ll be familiar with the scenario – as the PA industry is notoriously male-free. While many will say that the traits most com- monly associated with females makes women naturally more suited to the role of PA, some typically male characteris- tics are also highly sought after for administrative roles:
Drive and ambition: It’s rare for some- one with no experience to walk straight into a PA role. You need to have ambi- tion to work your way up the career ladder from office junior to the top of
the tree. But who says it’s only men who are ambitious in the workplace? Straightforward: It’s another gender stereotype that simply isn’t true – that men are more straightforward in their approaches. Of course, if you happen to possess this particular characteristic it will make you a stand out PA, as every boss appreciates someone who can cut to the chase. Logical: Yet another assumption that we know many top PAs can refute, men are often considered to take a more logical approach, while women are more emotional. In your role of PA you’ll need to be logical as you’ll be responsible for dealing with problems on a daily basis and anticipating issues before they arise.

Proving they’re one step ahead of the rest, at the end of March Hays held a networking event where PAs were invited to hear three male

Magistrates Court on June 13, alongside her former boss Rebekah and Rebekah’s husband Charlie Brooks. Paul Edwards, Rebekah’s chauffeur, security consultant Darly Jorsling and Mark Hanna, head of security at News of the World have also been charged with the same offence. All six are charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. The case of Cheryl Carter is a reminder
to PAs that whilst loyalty to your boss is important, there is always a line not to be crossed. In this instance, the charge is that this PA was conspiring with her boss to remove seven boxes of material from the archive of News International, publishers of the doomed paper.
