F
or a mid-volume military vehicle engine housing, the permanent mold casting process reduced machining costs, enhanced aluminum properties and provided a good surface fi nish without the use of sand cores. T e casting supplier, Watry Industries LLC, Sheboygan, Wis., produced the 38-lb. casting in aluminum 319.
Smooth surface fi nishes reduce or eliminate machining operations, as features can be cast near-net-shape.
• T e surface fi nish of this permanent mold casting was driven by the mold cavity fi nish and the use of a coating. Consult with your casting supplier on achievable surface fi nishes.
• Overall, permanent mold casting introduces clean metal into the mold cavity, achieving high internal and sub-surface soundness.
