Powdermet Inc. Joins Nano-Casting Research Group
Powdermet Inc., Euclid, Ohio, announced it has joined the joint venture nano-casting development team currently composed of Oshkosh Corp., Oshkosh, Wis., Eck Industries, Manitowoc, Wis., and the Univ. of Wisconsin-Madison.
T e development team, established in 2010 with funding from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, intends to achieve castable aluminum materials with the strength of steel, but at much lower weight. Powdermet said in a statement
it intends to help the joint venture expand the use of nanocomposites through cost reduction and by taking their application from simple molded or machined parts into larger, complex metal castings. T e work will expand on laboratory tests conducted by the team’s project leader, the Univ. of Wisconsin-Madison, showing the incorporation of nanoparticles can greatly increase the performance of aluminum alloys at lower cost than rare-earth additions. Powdermet believes its expertise
in working with nanocomposites will help the team overcome the diffi culty of inducing nanoparticles to disperse homogeneously throughout a casting. “T is joint venture opportunity
further strengthens Powdermet’s position at the leading edge of nanotechnology, transitioning it into mainstream manufacturing technology and innovation,” said Brian Doud, Powdermet’s general manager. “Moving our nanoparticle concepts and products from the laboratory into large-scale functional components is an exciting opportunity for us to compete in the global marketplace.” Powdermet develops materials that enable reduced weight, resource consumption, environmental footprint and life cycle costs, as well as increased energy effi ciency.
Personnel Changes Walter (Terry) Lutz, retired from
Signicast, Hartford, Wis. Todd McDonald, former vice president of sales, and Greg Gasper, former vice president of manufacturing, will succeed Lutz as president/CEO and COO. Eagle Group, Muskegon, Mich.,
