Newscast Precision Castparts Corp.,


Portland, Ore., has continued to diversify its holdings with the acquisition of Dickson Testing Co., South Gate, Calif., and Aerocraft Heat Treating Co., Paramount, Calif. In addition to large structural investment castings and airfoil castings, Precision Castparts makes forged components and fasteners for aerospace applications. The company also produces airfoil castings for the industrial gas turbine market.

Pere, Wis., was nominated for the Wisconsin Family Business of the Year Award, which highlights the accomplishments of private, family- owned businesses based in Wisconsin that plan to pass ownership to the next generation.


Whitman Castings Inc.,


Whitman, Mass., has acquired the assets of Somerset Foundries, Somerset, Pa., according to the Folk Group, Doylestown, Pa., which initiated the transaction and advised the seller. A spokesperson for Somerset said in February the company was in the process of fi nding a buyer. According to company controller Linda Heining, Somerset would have been liquidated if a deal could not have been reached. T e green sand and nobake metalcasting facility serves a variety of end-use industries. According to Heining, the company issued its closing notice on Dec. 30, 2011, because it was not profi table.

a division of McWane Inc., has installed a core machine from LaempeReich Corporation, Trussville, Ala. T e new core production cell will assist in meeting increased core production demands and will ease the burden on the metalcaster’s existing coldbox core machine, which has been in operation for more than 18 years. T e new core production cell consists of a

core shooter, gas generator and sand mixer, all integrated into a central control system.

caster Watry Industries LLC, Sheboygan, Wis., announced it has opened its excess powder coating capacity to outside business. T e facility is capable of coating parts from other metalcasters, metal stampers and metal fabricators, among other manufacturers.


General Motors’ China


Advanced Technical Center announced its research and development facility has completed the initial low-pressure casting of a magnesium part. The team


developed a prototype magnesium alloy control arm. The part, which is used in vehicle chassis systems, is 30% lighter than a similar part made from aluminum. Lighter parts mean improved fuel efficiency for consumers. The company called the achievement a milestone in lightweight automotive materials research. 
