Colorado Springs a week ago? Perhaps the Boy Scout motto needs to be repeated: “Be Prepared.” Okay, you get the idea. When our kids

were young, or when “you” were younger, we went over home evacuation in case of fire, and didn’t think anything about having a plan that the entire family was aware of. Maybe we need to think and discuss with our families about an evacuation scenario, regardless of where we live … and pray we never need it. Okay, off my safety preparedness soapbox

and on to jets! I’ve mentioned Andy Zaner and his huge 144-inch T-38, constructed entirely of blue foam, several times over the last few months, and now I can report that it has flown! Andy decided to take a day off from work and headed out to a dry lake bed for his first flight, and documented it with a handy key-chain camera. While the quality of the video is not the greatest (though it is far better than some that friends have shot for me with a quality camera) it is truly im- pressive to see this beast in the air, and the

photos (for the crowd) were had. If one F-15 is fun, four is fantastic! Dan Brunson (above right) is down low and just finished looking for bogies within the office complex in the background. Chatfield can have very scenic backgrounds.

sound that it makes has to be heard to be believed. The airplane has been slightly re-engi-

neered with stronger retracts (more “oomph” to get the wheels up) and slightly modified ducting, and just needs the canopy to be fin- ished to fly again. The full length video (4.5 minutes) can be found on page 108 of the thread at: http://tinyurl.com/cw6ckon. Andy also cropped out the far away stuff and left in the passes and close-in stuff which is at: http://tinyurl.com/ccd68c2, or, if you prefer a different format it can be found on Vimeo at: http://vimeo.com/43938015#. It is well worth the 45 seconds for the abbreviated version, and the long version is nice to watch the sta- bility of his big, beautiful Talon. Well done Andy!

Andy’s big T-38 has generated a lot of in-

terest in a smaller sized version, and has be- gat a semi-group design process with Fahim (the owner and designer of Wowplanes.com) already having a roughed-out fuselage to get things fine tuned on, powered by a single 90mm fan … hmm … me drooling big time! The thread can be found at: http://

tinyurl.com/6s9xbrg for much more infor- mation and photos. I’ll be keeping you ap- prised of both of these projects, since Andy’s is so impressive, and the Wow Planes ver- sion should be “just right” in size (81 inches long with a detachable nose section), com- plexity, cost and performance. More of Modellbau’s F-86Ds are taking to

the skies: one in Louisiana was converted to edf, and over in Florida, Jim Garcia got his finished and in the air as well. Going with the stock covering, when it is well applied, saves time and weight … and looks good to boot! Moving two-thirds of the way across the country, here in Colorado we have four large warbird events, and the season opener is War Birds over Denver, held at the Chatfield State Park flying field. Since I was busy with my hands inside of several folk’s airplanes (and yes I did take time to enjoy flying my venera- ble Avonds F-15), Rod Hart used his photo skills to capture several fantastic shots. Well, I’m out of space, so until next time:

keep cool with the heat by keeping busy with your building projects, fly safe, and trust in thrust!

Shazam Kianpour’s F-100 (from the BVM kit) (above) reaches for the runway following another successful flight. Ordinance, dirt and scuffs make this work of art look completely lifelike in person. A twin edf Me-262 (at right) was caught by Rod’s lens. Unfortunately the owner had to leave early in the event (before Greg got there) so information could not be obtained, but Rod states: “It looked like it had just finished a sortie and was ready to re-fuel and re-arm.”
