Bercerelli’s Chinese Stunter, the Skywriter, is a medium-sized control line Stunt model designed by Zang Xiang Dong of China. The Skywriter is different due to its side mount- ed engine location in a full-sized fuselage. This has been a very successful model and has been a winner on the international front for years and as far back as 1988. Ger- manico’s rendition is a kit cut by Tom Dixon, and Germanico uses a Randy Smith PA .61 side exhaust for power. This exits the exhaust blast in a downward direction and away from the body and lower wing panels of the Skywriter. Germanico’s Skywriter has a 59-inch span

and a wing and flap area of 660 square inch- es. He uses a PPG paint system in a base coat/clear coat finalization. Germanico in- stalled a five-ounce tank and uses Sig Champion 5% nitro based fuel. He has a Bol- ly 12.5–5.5 two-blade prop on the PA engine and releases the model at around 9600 rpm. That combination sets a 5.2-second lap time, and it seems Germanico is very happy with this setting. The model weighs in at 58 ounces and utilizes 64-foot lines measured eyelet to eyelet. Germanico is from Puerto Rico and practices at the Roberto Clemente Sport Complex. Germanico has been a good friend to me.

Crist Rigotti’s Protroma Crist Rigotti’s electric profile is his new Protroma. Although Crist is now building a full-bodied model at the moment, (how about an F-105 semi-scale in Thunderbird colors) his series of profiles has brought him a lot of success in the Midwest area. Crist’s Protroma is encapsulated in a 56.5-inch span with 610 square inches of wing area. The model sports tricycle landing gear and his own foam wing. He uses a full carbon fiber fully adjustable control system, and the tail volume is 25% of the total wing and flap area.

Germanico Bercerelli takes in a practice flight on the “L” pad at the 2011 U.S. AMA Nationals near Muncie, Indiana. His launcher is unknown. Germanico uses a Randy Smith .61 for power.

Crist’s power system utilizes a Scorpion S- II-3026-710 motor, Castle Creations ICE LITE 50 with a Will Hubin FM-9 Timer. He spins an APC 13–5.5 EP prop. The motor is supported by a Thunder Power G6 5S 2700 mAh Pro Lite battery. The finish is all MonoKote. Crist chose an 8.5-inch nose mo- ment and a 17.5-inch tail moment for his very successful Protroma.

Frank Williams’ Vortex One of my good Texas friends, Frank Williams, brings a very unique model to the Nats. That statement is strange in the fact that Frank seldom brings anything conven- tional to the modeling circle. He is a “rocket scientist” and just cannot help it. His new Vortex model is electric powered and lifted by a humpback whale fin design for the leading

edge of his model wing. Frank had read of the power provided by the leading edge of the fins on humpback whales, and this form of turbu- lation allows the whales to swim faster and turn tighter while reducing hard stalling. The phrase Frank used to describe it was tuber- cles on the whale’s fin leading edge. Frank’s model was built in the three

weeks prior to the Nats of 2011. He uses a Plettenberg 25-14 motor with a Hyperion 3300 5-cell battery and a Will Hubin con- troller. The wing area of the Vortex is 700 square inches, and the wing span is 58 inch- es. The tail moment is 21 inches measured from the flap leading edge to the elevator leading edge. The covering is Hangar 9’s Ul- tracote and the Vortex weighs in at 75 ounces. A TruTurn spinner points the Vortex through the pattern.

You’ve gotta love this nose (above left) as you cannot make a bad spinner match during the trimming sessions. Germanico seems to be using a modified Big Art Adamisin muffler. The needle valve is not at an ideal spot from a safety

24

standpoint, but Germanico seems to utilize it well. Crist Rigotti (above right) continually brings new and exciting models to the local and regional contest sites. His Protromais really neat. More details are in the text.
