A little known early Russian flying wing makes for a great sport scale electric!

his unusual flying wing was a brain child of prolific Russian designer Boris Ivanovich Cheranovskij. He was a pioneer in designing flying wing


aircraft. When he had just entered the Zhukovskii Academy in 1922, he proposed to build the flying wing design with parabolic platform. He was rejected, but the wing tunnel tests showed soundness of this type of wing planform. He built a simple glider, the BICh-1.


Using the BICh-1 design, he built several


similar looking designs, one of which was a BICh-7A. The full size plane was flown in 1932. It was reported that the BICh-7A had good flying characteristics, good directional stability and good response to the pilot in- puts. The plane was powered by a 100 hp Bristol Lucifer engine. The maximum speed was 165 km/h (102 mph). For a while I was looking at building the
