FULFILMENT LABELLING

BOOTHS CASHES IN WITH INVOICE

PROCESSING Booths has purchased accounts payable invoice processing (APIP) software from Canon to reduce manual invoice processing time and costs. The supermarket chain, which

etailers who use overnight parcel companies to deliver their orders no longer need to attach parcel labels on their consignments. Following an innovation by internet company NetDespatch, the parcel label information can be embedded in the retailer’s own label, as opposed to printing another, separate shipping label for the carrier. Michael Green, Clayton Horsnell technical manager for Colchester bathroom retailer and NetDespatch user, commented: “We started using the NetDespatch printing application as part of our fulfilment process since November of last year. It hooks into our in-house order processing system and the warehouse uses it to book consignments for deliveries. Through it we ship at least 30 consignments per day.” He continued: “It has removed a lot of wasted time and effort on the side of the warehouse. Before, we would give the warehouse a paper copy of the addresses, which they’d have to type into the booking system manually. This took time and had potential for errors. Now, the warehouse gets a webpage with all the orders on it. They select which orders to book in and the system handles the bookings and gives them a label to print out. It’s gone from taking up to five minutes to input, process and print a single label to being able to do multiple labels in a minute.

“It has allowed us to be able to expand our operations without having to worry about the warehouse being overwhelmed with entering addresses or without needing to hire extra staff in the warehouse just to enter addresses into a computer system. It has also enabled us to put a much later cut-off time on same-day order processing. Before, to be safe, we had to have an order in before 10am for same day processing. With the new system, we’re able to get an item dispatched from an order placed at 2pm,” Green concluded.

currently operates 28 supermarket stores across Yorkshire and the North- West of England, recently implemented Canon’s APIP software to reduce the costs associated with paying its growing supplier database. Andrew Rafferty, from Booths, said: “Booths provide customers with fresh, high quality and often local produce, which relies partly on having strong day- to-day working relationships with both local and national suppliers. Booths aim to open a further 10 supermarkets over the next fi ve years and believe Canon’s accounting solution will provide us with the fl exibility to accurately manage costs as we look to grow in the future.”

Canon’s APIP solution scans an

invoice, transforming it into an editable document. It then uses a rules-based approach to extract and validate the invoice data, before using database look-ups to connect the invoice to the supplier.

NEW PRINTERS CUT NORFA WASTE

Norfa, a major retail chain in Lithuania, is using the latest printing technology from Citizen Systems Europe to streamline one of its most successful marketing strategies. The company is using a number of Citizen’s high performance CLP-521 printers to

provide fast and cost-effective printing of high quality markdown labels, alongside various types of handheld terminals, for use in its regular discount sale activities across its branches. Dimitrij Kulakov, head of the IT department at JSC Norfos mažmena, explained: “With products needing to be reduced in our stores every day, it is vital that everything runs as smoothly as possible. We chose the Citizen printers for the job as, on evaluation of the available technologies, they stood out as the most effective solution. “For example, they have really helped us to streamline the way we print and apply labels to produce, enabling us to print different sized labels according to the type of product that is being marked down. Just as importantly, the printers are exceptionally easy to use and maintain, allowing staff to remain focused on more important tasks. Ultimately, the high quality of the Citizen printers and operational simplicity confi rms our choice.”
