From The Editor COMPUTERS AND MAGAZINES CAN PLAY NICE By Jayme Ramson
As a former newspaper editor, I’ve seen firsthand what happens when digital media takes over and print media fails to adapt. Fortunately, USA Triathlon Magazine welcomed the digital revolution far before most magazines. In addition to our digital magazine, we also have an iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch version available via the free USA Triathlon Magazine app in the iTunes App Store. We strive to be the leading National Governing Body when it comes to print and digital initiatives, so naturally we’re taking our digital presence a step further. The cover of this issue features image recognition technology. It’s not quite as cool as what you see in spy movies, but we think our readers will enjoy it.

BUDDING TRI KID As I got out of bed on a Sunday morning and walked toward the kitchen I saw my 3-year-old son sitting at the table and concentrating heavily. I could only assume it was a book because we had several on the table. I couldn’t tell right away what book it was, and he was quiet so I decided not to disturb him.
The next thing I heard was him saying “Papa, it’s you bicicletta (his mom is Italian),” so I went to see what he was looking at and there it was, our magazine. He had seen the photo of the Blue Triad on page 3 [I don’t own one], but my road bike is black so I could see
him thinking it was mine. He then asked if I was going for a ride. When I answered “no, I was thinking of a run,” he replied “No Papa! You ride your bike today and I color,” so I took a picture, geared up and hit the road. He turned 3 on May 15 and is a budding tri kid. Thank you for having a kids section with activities that help him engage and bond with me and our sport. Stephan Groce

PATTY PEOPLES-RESH (Redlands, Calif.)
2011 Highlights: Won the 55-59 age group at Duathlon Nationals and the world title in the sprint duathlon event. “I’m very honored to be recognized for this award and to share it with [my daughter]. Thank you USAT for putting so
much time and effort into the age-group categories. I’ve been involved in multisports since 1982 and can’t imagine my life without it. Thanks also to all the people and companies who have supported me in travelling down an untraditional road, especially my mom!”
