Regions PACIFIC NORTHWEST

There are many events happening in the Pacific Northwest Region this summer, hopefully already on the calendars. The annual membership meeting will be held August 10 in Couer d’Alene, Idaho, in conjunction with the USA Triathlon Regional Age Group Championship Race. The scenic challenge is also the regional club championship event with cash and prizes on the line. A USAT membership rally will be held with raffle items for old and new annual members to be given out at the awards ceremony. The Youth Splash and Dash series is under way in July with events in Everett, Mercer Island, and Boise.

The guest speaker at the annual membership meeting this year will be Heather Kelly, Western Washington graduate and owner and founder of OPENutrition (Optimum Performance Enhancing Nutrition). Two short lectures will be presented. “Eating for Performance” focuses on how digestive health is critical to performance as well as the importance of converting a carbohydrate driven metabolism to a fat fueled one. “Dynamic Eating Psychology – An Intro to Mind Body Nutrition” will discuss how stress affects digestion and the importance of eating speed and simple practices that enhance digestion and calorie-burning efficiency. More information on Heather and her talks can be found on our Facebook page. This excellent education opportunity will

take place at the CDA Chamber of Commerce at 4 p.m. on Aug. 10. We are working hard to increase club participation and awareness in the PNW and hoping to have good representation in CDA. Club participation is a great way to get more people involved in our multisport lifestyle. If your club wants to be more active in our planning please send us a name. Youth participation is on the rise throughout the region thanks

to USAT’s commitment to promote the Splash and Dash Series. These events are for youth ages 7-15 and will be a 100m or 200m swim and a 1k or 2k run.

Race safe, have fun, and spread the word on the multisport lifestyle!

SOUTHEAST SECTC Training Camp

Every March, the Southeast Collegiate Triathlon Conference (SECTC) hosts its annual triathlon training camp. This year’s training camp was held in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Schools from Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee attended the annual training camp, which was hosted at the University of Alabama. Each year, the training clinic brings in several top-level coaches from around the Southeast. This year was no exception. The coaches who attend the training camp volunteer their time and expertise to the athletes. Coaches who attended this year’s camp included: Kathleen Johnston, Megan Melgaard, John Hanna, Karen Doehrman and Eric Doehrman. The training clinic included personalized presentations from each of the coaches, a swim clinic hosted at the university aquatic center, field training sessions developed for ITU standard racing, and a police-escorted group bike ride on Sunday morning. Overall, the training clinic is viewed as a warm-up for the SECTC athletes as they prepare for the Collegiate National Championships, which are held annually each April. Collegiate Nationals
