of the March total are as a result of the government’s Plugged-In Places scheme, a £30m funding initiative that’s part of its Plug-In Vehicle Infrastructure Strategy. This was published in June 2011 to address the roll-out of public EV charging infrastructure. The Plugged-In Places scheme offers match-funding to consortia of businesses and public sector partners, to support the installation of EV recharging infrastructure in key places across the UK. It is intended that data from this scheme – including how drivers use and recharge their vehicles – will then help inform the design of a national system of recharging infrastructure. The programme, which aims to provide up to 8,500 charge points, is initially focused on eight regions of the UK including the East of England, Greater Manchester, London, Midlands, Milton Keynes, north-east England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Across the UK Projects to install EV charging points are underway across the UK. One example is

Public EV recharging points are springing up across the UK as a result of both private enterprise and public funding

Source London, a network that currently has more than 650 charging points across the capital – the highest number in Europe. It was launched last year by London Mayor Boris Johnson as part of a strategy to encourage EV take-up and establish London as ‘the EV capital of Europe’. Source London brings Transport for

London together with a number of private and public partners to roll out a network of charge points across the city (where, incidentally, EVs incur no congestion charge), bringing together new and existing charge points under one network. Users currently have to register, for a £10 fee, but charging is free. Situated at supermarkets, on the street, in London Underground car parks and at car parks all over the capital, the network is expected to grow to 1,300 charge points by 2014.

Other privately-funded projects are helping to boost the expansion of EV charging infrastructure across the country. POLAR, a nationwide network of charging points operated by EV infrastructure specialist
