is qualified in and that she completes an eight-day Training Course with a college to gain the appropriate training and skills in how to teach. Some colleges deliver the training over six days but in my experience I have found that it necessitates eight days for more thorough delivery and understanding of each assignment and to ensure that students complete their DVD practical and theory classes for the accrediting bodies.”

“The requirements vary from sector to sector and whether you are going to be training for a private company or a college,” explains Britta. “Depending on your skills and qualification you might have to do some extra courses or learn advanced skills in order to enrol on a teacher’s course. Part of any of those courses should not only be the actual skill that you are going to teach but the way and technique of how to bring your knowledge over to the student in a professional and easy understandable way.”

There is some debate, however, as to whether you require formal teaching qualifications if you are only planning on working as a Brand Educator.

Candice says: “Whether you require a teaching qualification is dependent on the brand. Many product brands will interview you without a teaching qualification if there is evidence of credible hands-on industry experience and your communications with them demonstrate you have an ability to interact well with other people. You may well be asked to deliver a short presentation for the interviewer to establish whether you have the ability to engage an audience, provide evidence of your industry and skin knowledge for credibility, and demonstrate your therapy and / or teaching skills.”

“There are several levels of teaching qualification available and for us at Airbase Make-Up this is always a huge advantage and the more qualifications that you have in teaching the better,” says Sam.

Linda Ennis believes that you do need a formal Educator’s qualification when you’re working as a brand Educator. “In order to become an Educator for a brand it is vital in this competitive market to hold a training qualification. Companies now will not entertain candidates without at least this,” she says.

“A formal teacher training qualification is beneficial but not an essential requirement for us when we recruit trainers to provide our Environ, Jane Iredale and Advanced Nutrition Programme courses,” explains Clare. “When someone has a good skill base within the industry and a good knowledge of skin and skin conditions we can teach them how to teach so people learn effectively.

Many brands will have their own training route to ensure that their Educators fully understand the products and that they can all deliver the same level of training. For example, Calgel Educators are required to have achieved Premier Status Standard.

Work experience

Whilst you may feel you would be a great Educator, unless you have actually experienced the role and responsibilities of delivering training it is difficult to gauge whether this is the right career path for you so getting experience is important. “It may be possible for the college where you are training to facilitate some teaching experience however this can depend on programme availability and the amount of persons requiring experience, but student trainers may have to be inventive and create their own teaching experience,” says Derek.

He continues: “For example, if you work in a salon, can you offer your customers mini lectures on skin care, make-up or a particular new service/product you want to promote in your salon, or invite some friends to your house and do something similar.

“You could develop an introductory programme for a local community group or VEC evening classes and present it to the managers or principal/s, or offer your teaching services voluntary to gain experience; the National Adult Literacy Association are always looking for volunteers. Any of these initiatives will help hone your planning, communication and delivery skills.”

Job opportunities

“One of the key advantages to becoming a Product Trainer is personal and professional development,” comments Candice. “Having a training position on your CV can enhance your employment prospects greatly, as it is one way a prospective employer might assess your suitability for other positions. Teachers and Trainers who are confidant

communicators may well be able to take on more challenging roles.

“In terms of prospects, I’d say if you have the ability there is always a company waiting to snap you up. For the very best experience look for companies with a proven educational track record.”

Derek adds: “I think it’s important that trainers adapt realistic expectations of career progression on qualifying. While there are many opportunities for those who are open minded it would seem that in the current climate, full time teaching positions are few in mainstream or private institutions. However, because of the transient nature of teaching, part-time positions seem to become available regularly.

“Also, there are many opportunities for those who are prepared to think laterally, such as training positions with distributors, or training roles in Spas/hotels, or training with skin care or make-up brands.

“Trainers could also try to ‘invent’ work for themselves by presenting a hobby/personal interest courses to their local VEC or community education centre for their evening classes. Other options could be Health / Prison services or work- based training.”

Where to go from here

TheWaverley Academy are delivering a free teacher training workshop at their Dublin premises on 2nd July which would be a great introduction to anyone considering becoming an Educator. The workshop, titled ‘Essential Criteria For Teaching Adults’, is aimed at those who want to start teaching at a basic level, or for those interested in pursuing teaching careers in the Hair, Beauty or Fitness sectors.

Principle Derek O Kelly says: “The workshop will be a great opportunity for anyone thinking of pursuing a career in teaching or those who want to teach at a basic level. We’ve been at the cutting edge of developments in teaching adults over the past 20 years and would like to share some of this knowledge with others. The workshop is guaranteed to be informative and engaging with the emphasis on interaction and discussion.”

Attendance is free and booking in advance is essential as places are limited, and attendees will also receive a discount on TheWaverley Academy’s teaching courses starting in October.
