Enhance your career by entering the world of education


So you’ve worked hard to establish your reputation as a beauty therapist or nail technician; perhaps you run your own business, but still want more from your career. Have you considered becoming an Educator or Tutor?


“Teaching is a very rewarding career - the joy it gives me to pass on my knowledge, experience and skills to new and developing therapists is immense,” says Marie-Louise Coster of All About Mi Beauty Therapy and Training.


She continues: “I knew I wanted to teach from the outset and after several years in the industry I began my teacher training. The passion I have for this industry is as strong as it was when I first started out and is only getting stronger.”


Do you have what it


takes? If you’re considering a career as an Educator, whether it be working directly with a brand or at a college, you must be sure that you have what it takes.


“Becoming a product trainer for a brand requires two crucial attributes: excellent communication skills and recognised industry experience,” Candice Gardner, Education Training Manager at Dermalogica believes.


“In my opinion to become a trainer/lecturer the most important tool to have is experience in what you are teaching,” says Audrey Heffernan, OPI Educator for Hennessy Hair and Beauty Supplies.


“A good knowledge of the beauty industry is a necessity. The more experience you have the more you can give back to your students. You must experience it yourself to be able to give it back to your students,” she adds.


Sam Gilmore, training manager at Airbase, adds: “What is as important for us as a brand are the skills that come with good professionalism and determination. These include impeccable timekeeping, excellent administration skills, lively and outgoing personality with a friendly disposition, and a flexible approach and an ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines. These skills may sound simple but are essential for a good trainer to be successful.


“With regards to prospects for work, as we use a range of freelance trainers - the


ones that demonstrate these skills on an ongoing basis get more work.”


“To become an Educator for a brand you must be working with that brand for a long time and be very familiar with the different products and treatments,” Audrey explains. “Intensive training with the brand is vital. Getting a background on the company and getting some teacher training is also very beneficial. The more knowledge you have the easier you will find teaching.”


Brand Educators not only deliver courses in colleges or training centres, but also represent the company at trade events and in other promotional areas.


“Calgel’s freelance educators deliver basic courses, nail art and advanced courses, attend and demonstrate Calgel and other Izabelle Hammon brands at exhibitions, roadshows and independent businesses,” explains Yvette Christy, Marketing Manager at Izabelle Hammon Ltd. Yvette also advises that their Educators must be available to work up to eight days a month, so you must take this sort of commitment into consideration if you are employed or run your own business.


So what personal qualities are necessities? “[Brands] are looking for confidence in delivery; this allows a teacher to be credible to her students.
