Huntsman launches solar reflecting pigments

HallStar wins patent for bio-additive


Altiris can be used to increase the solar reflectance of coloured vinyl siding


Huntsman has commercial- ised an infrared reflecting pigment based on titanium dioxide that allows polymer products of any colour to reflect solar energy. Called Altiris, the additive can increase solar reflection by more than 100% in some colour ranges, according to the company. In addition, surface temperatures can be reduced by more than 50% in certain colours. Such results can help


increase the lifespan of products as they stay cooler and suffer less from heat cycling stresses. Altiris can be used to make plastic products less prone to warping, allowing them to be used in warmer regions of the world.


COMPATIBILIZERS Adell adds coupling agents


Adell Plastics has launched a new line of maleic anhydride- modified polyolefins for use as compatibilizers in polymer compounding. The additives have been designed to reduce the interfacial forces between

polymers and fillers to increase adhesion. They can also deliver more uniform dispersion and more stable morphologies. Initial offerings in Adell’s


new compatibilizer product family include EK-10-MAH

According to Huntsman, its


new pigment means that products like vinyl siding and window profiles can be made available in wider range of colours. It can be applied in single extrusions or in coloured capstocks. The company adds that such applications can help to keep buildings cooler and more energy efficient. launched so far. Altiris 550 pigment has high solar reflectance and is particularly suited to medium to light shades. The other choice, Altiris 800 has been designed to have a combination of high infrared reflection and low tint reduction making it suitable for use in dark and vibrant colours. HallStar has been awarded a US patent (number 8,158,731) covering biopolymer compositions with improved flexibility. It applies to the company’s novel, bio-based polymeric additives, which are derived from renewable feedstocks. Its HallGreen R-8010


product is a new, bio-based polymeric succinate that improves the flexibility of biopolymers including PLA, starch-based polymers, PHA, and PHB. “Brittleness can be a real


problem with biopolymer products,” says Robert Hu, HallStar vice president for resarch and development. “HallGreen R-8010 enhances the flexibility and pliability of compounds and end products, and it provides tangible benefits at customers’ manufacturing facilities by increasing throughput and reducing energy consumption.” Test results show that


performance benefits can be seen at concentrations as low as 10%. HallStar adds that when used at 30% loading levels, R-8010 provides a tenfold increase in elongation percentage at break and a 5% reduction in both tensile strenth and tensile at break. In addition, it increases the melt flow index, which can increase throughput and reduce melt temperature and energy consumption in processing facilities. ❙ www.hallstar.com
