were developed. Pebax MV2080 is designed for use in polyolefins, PS, ABS, PC, PVC, PET and PBT, while Pebax MV2030 is aimed at engineering resins such as PA, POM and PPS. Their performance has been demonstrated in


commercial applications that include packaging of electronic devices used in products such as iPods and iPads, as well as connecting parts. They are also being used in pharmaceutical applications, including PE bags that hold powders, and in polyolefin compounds used for bulk containers that hold potentially explosive powders.


Changes in antistats In the antistats field, the move toward non-amine based additives is gaining momentum, particularly in polyole- fins for food packaging applications. Traditional migrating antistats, such as glycerol monostearate, long-chain alkyl phenols and ethoxylated amines, have long been used in packaging products. They provide cost-effective, short-term benefits, helping to separate surfaces during processing and to reduce the attraction of dust. Stricter food safety packaging regulations originated


in the EU a decade ago and have included the prohibition of long-chain alkyl phenols and significant limitations on the use of ethoxylated amines. The US FDA, for example, now limits the use of amines to 1000 ppm. Bjarne Nielsen, senior applications manager at


DuPont Polymer Additives, explains: “Antistats are an important additive in many different packaging applications serving a well-defined purpose: preventing the attraction of dust and other fine particles to the polymer surface that would otherwise render a

packaged product unattractive. There is also a wide- spread desire to avoid traditional ethoxylated amine chemistry whenever possible as demands for unques- tioned safe chemistry in food packaging grows steadily.” At last month’s NPE 2012 event, DuPont introduced a


new amine-free antistat solution specifically designed for BOPP (bi-axially-oriented polypropylene) and PP films. Grindsted AR100 reportedly combines excellent perform- ance (see graph) along with an outstanding safety profile and worldwide food contact approval. The new antistat, along with other bio-based additives promoted by DuPont, is the result of last year’s acquisition of Danisco, a leading global producer of food emulsifiers.
