PHOTOS: JOHN TANZER

John Tanzer has created a beautiful model of the Boeing F4B4 (above). He has definitely not lost his touch in the art of modeling. John’s F4B4 is finished in silkspan and dope (at right) with lots of handmade details to finish off an incredible model of this well-known golden age biplane.

the legendary Joe Wagner. Again, here’s where old meets new: The Dakota was de- signed for the Cox .049, but in keeping with things modern, Mike built his model for electric power using a common outrunner motor with a cut-off timer to control the mo- tor run time. The first couple of flights proved to be a bit tricky, but after a couple of repairs the model trimmed out nicely and flies well. Now then, anyone who has been paying attention will know the name Tom Binkley. Tom sorta’ came out of the woodwork re- cently and has become extremely prolific with his designs, and never ceases to amaze me with what he’ll conjure up next. This time around he dropped in with the cutest little micro flyer I’ve seen in quite some time with the One-70-Toon, based on an old Fred Reese design. The model is powered with an HK 1811-1500 10-gram outrunner motor swinging a GWS 5-3 prop and a 370 mAh 2S battery. Guidance for the 3-channel model, which includes a steerable nose wheel, comes from a pair of 2-gram servos and a Blue Aero Rx. Flying weight is 99 grams

with a 5.8-ounce wing loading. The model is reported to be a bit pitch sensitive, though overall is very stable, and a terrific little flyer.

Changing directions again, let’s have a

look at a couple of twins—twin engines that is. First is Lee Moore’s Dragon Rapide built from the Dumas kit. The Rapide is powered with a pair of 3.5:1 IPS drives and guided by 4-channel R/C. The second is Ron Stanfield’s Ripple Skipper built from FM plans (CF942). The original design used Astro Cobalt 035s, but Ron’s model was equipped with the more modern SuperTigre 400 out- runners and 20A ESCs and a pair of 1300 mAh 3S Li-Po batteries and is guided by four 9-gram servos and a Hitec 555 Rx. And as long as we’re “puddle jumping”,

how about Tom Weisgerber’s Mini Drake built from the Zeke Brubaker’s Park Scale Models kit? The Mini-Drake is a shrunken off-shoot of the earlier Ken Willard Drake. Power comes from an E-flite 250 motor, 10A ESC and 2S battery. Rudder and elevator control is handled by two ElectriFly Nano servos and a Futaba 2.4 GHz radio. And pi-

loting this little jewel is none other then Wild Bill Kelso from the movie 1941—hey, you gotta’ have a pilot, right? And last, but certainly not least is John Tanzer’s Boeing F4B4 built from his own plans. Any regular to FLYINGMODELS maga- zine should know John’s name well, and the F4B4 has to be one of his best yet. The mod- el spans 46 inches and finished out at 4 pounds, 3 ounces. Power is a RimFire 15 with a 45A ESC and a 2200 mAh 3S Li-Po battery. The model is all-wood construction and covered with silkspan and dope. The cowl is hand laid fiberglass with lots of de- tail on the dummy radial engine. Well done, and even at the tender young age of 80, John has certainly not lost his touch! Well, it looks like we’ve run out of space already, so will pause for now and get busy thinking about next month. But for now, I’d like to offer a heartfelt “well done” to every- one who participated this month, and am al- ready looking forward to what tomorrow has to bring. So till next month, keep the saw- dust flying, and do drop a line and show us your stuff.

been built in many ways, including this electric F/F conversion by Mike Hudlass. Jerry Smith has doubled the fun with the Bogie 72and the Little Bogie(below center) from Mountain Models. Tom Binkley’s wife, Dianna, took this terrific in- flight shot (below right) of Tom’s brand new One-70-Toon.
