ales of the Cessna 170 began in late 1948. Essentially, the first C-170 was a four seat version of the earli- er C-120. Like its predecessor, the


early 170 had an all-metal fuselage with fabric covered wings. Power was provided by the Continental C-145-2, 145 horsepow- er 4-cylinder opposed engine. Then in 1949 the C-170A was introduced, featuring a single strut wing with no dihe- dral, and shared the rounded vertical tail shape of the larger Cessna 190s and 195s.


The C-170B was introduced in 1952, and featured a new all-metal wing with dihedral similar to the military version. The new wing also featured washout built into the tapered outer section of the wing. The new design also incorporated a very effective Fowler flap system with up to 40 degrees deflection that is still used on Cessna’s light singles. Later in the design progression, the L-19


and O-1 Bird Dog evolved from the basic C- 170 design and was used by the military for
