Two double tail planes. This Olympus(above left), with PA-61 side exhaust, was 31st in Classic, and flown by FM’s Allen Brickhaus at the controls. Lou
Wolgast took 9th with his DS-60 powered Fury (above right). An inverted Continental(below), flown by Robert Compton, was 24th in Classic.
used. For 2012; first place in OTS went to Keith Trostle flying a DS-60 powered Big Job with 626.5 points. Second place went to Lou Wolgast flying a Madman 56 with a DS- 54, totaling 621.5 points. And third was Frank McMillan with 618.5 points flying his Madman 56 with an Orwick 64 replica. The Ignition circle found Frank McMillan
on top with his Madman and 332.75 points. Jim Lee with his Atwood Super Champion powered Go Devil took second with 326.25, and Joe Gilbert was third with 321.25 points flying an Anderson Spitfire 65 powered Humongous. At about noon each day competitive flying
I now have nine beginner pattern flights on my profile Nobler. Bob mentioned that it sure would be nice to have a new ship for Tucson and before you could say “wing over” Harold “Red” Reinhardt’s 1955 Stunt Wing was on the building board, and finsihed in time to fly at this 2012 VSC. This past March 13–17, 2012, there were
five days of Control Line Stunt flying in Tuc- son, Arizona. Both Old Time (OTS, models designed and published prior to December 31, 1952; flown to the 1951–52 AMA Stunt pattern) and Classic (for models designed and published prior to December 31, 1970; flying the modern AMA pattern).
OTS was flown Tuesday and Wednesday on
two circles, plus OT Ignition on a third circle, and Classic on three circles, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. VSC 2012 had 43 entries, in two groups of Old Time Stunt, and ten flying with ignition engines in a third group. Clas- sic had 64 entries flying in three groups. Flying started on Tuesday at 8 a.m. and continued until all pilots completed one offi- cial flight. Two attempts are allowed for an official flight. A second round was flown on Wednesday, switching circles and judges. The highest combined Round 1 and Round 2 score determine the winner. For ignition the highest of flight 1 and 2 is
is complete and the field is open for practice. The unpredictable wind in the afternoon is the reason for the short sessions. As the sun starts to move directly overhead in the cloudless 25% humidity, this Florida boy learned the concept of a siesta. Round 1 of Classic flying started on Thursday, and was continued Friday and Saturday. I can comment that the weather was perfect, 40s at night and early morning moving into the 80s by noon. Wind also co- operated until almost all flying was com- plete on Saturday, when it was reported that the last few flyers got a challenge. I un- derstand weather went down hill and there was even report of rain on Sunday. Mother Nature must like Stunt flying.
John Callentine adorned his beautiful P-51 Mustangwith “scale detail” and placed 14th in Classic with a PA- 52 for power. Upright (above) or inverted (at right) it flew very nicely.
