Cessna 170
The available plastic cowl (above left) is assembled and prepped for mounting to the fuselage. The wing struts (above right) are sanded to shape and the retention hooks shaped and glued in place. The struts are hand fitted on the model to insure the length is correct. The completed tail section (below left)
is fitted into the fuselage and will be used to locate the exit points for the rudder pull/pull cables. Even in its uncovered state, the Cessna has a very scale look to it. The model is all framed up (below right) and detail sanded and is ready for the final tear down and cover.
Cut the window frames and instrument
panel hood from file folder paper using the provided patterns. Fit and glue the panels in place on the fuselage, followed by the dowel cabane bracing. Assemble and fit the cowl onto the forward fuselage and glue the CM cowl mounting tabs in place, reinforced with a bit of 1⁄4-inch triangle stock. Align and screw the cowl in place, followed by the 1⁄16-
inch O.D. aluminum tube strut retention tubes. Lash the tubes to the frame with thread and secure with a drop of thin CyA. At this point, the framing and setup process is about done, so the model can be taken back down and detail sanded to prep for cover. With the fuselage and wings completed,
now is a good time to make up the lift struts. First, fit and glue the wing retention mag-
nets into the wing and fuselage and fit the wings in place on the fuselage. Sand the lift struts to shape as shown on the detail draw- ing and secure the bottom retention pin into the strut. Make up the upper retention pins and hand fit them into the strut with the wing blocked up to the proper dihedral. Make the second strut identical in length to the first.
The model was covered with Coverite Microlite (above left) , but it would be the perfect candidate for a silkspan or tissue and dope finish. With all the trim in
24
place (above right), the door outlines were added using a felt tip pen to complete the covering and trimming process.
