In the fisheries sector the company Alca Torda Applications developed the project Casapac, a prototype vessel under 12 meters for fishing (gillnetter) powered by electrochemical fuel cell fed by hydrogen/air.
However, one must not forget that the energy the most environmentally attractive is that not used. Of course it is necessary to reduce consumption, and that can be done by using for example light emitting diodes (LED) and other energy efficient appliances. But on board, the choice of equipment will depend on the type, the location and the period of navigation.
4.6 ACTION AT END OF SHIPS' LIFE
Ship-breaking is a big problem today. Dismantling solutions exist in the area of fishing, boating and merchant navy. However, ship owners often recur
boats abandoned, the fishing to
alternatives which are less expensive but more hazardous for the environment (pleasure cemetery of
boats, ship-breaking yards
disregarding environment and the health of workers etc.). If governments will not take a strong position (obligation to deconstruct boats according to the rules, development of
extended producer responsibility, creation of a
compliance scheme for recreational boats etc.), owners will go on opting for the least costly procedure.
However, the difficulty to recycle certain materials will give a push towards eco-design in the boat construction of the future. In France a parliamentary commission has been created in the context of the Grenelle de la Mer to solve the problem of ship dismantling [5].
The
commission's objectives are to consider the establishment of a branch of industry for ship-breaking in France while developing the training courses related. This industrial approach reflects the intention of strengthening European and international regulations for the activity.
4.7 WHY ECO-DESIGN?
There are several reasons why companies engage in this process. Some speak of 'value' or even 'duty', while others emphasize the need for anticipation of changes in regulations, and think of the market, reducing costs, improving performance and the image of the company. It is important for the latter to see that eco-design does not put at stake their sales figures.
French research and industrial centers seek to conquer new markets
by environment. Much
focusing more closely on the research is done on eco-based
materials, optimization of hull, propulsion systems with low exhaust emissions, on new energy sources (wind, solar, hydrogen, algae …), on systems to reduce pollution from
ships (waste, sewage) or on technology sustainably manage the boats' end of life. to Figure 4: Eoseas, STX France
5.2 ECO-DESIGN TOOL: SUSTAINABLE SHIP DESIGN
In 2008, Neopolia commissioned Stirling Design International and EVEA, a consulting firm in eco-design, to develop a tool for life cycle analysis specially adapted to the naval sector.
The shipyards STX, DCNS, Saint-Nazaire Marine, the shipping design offices Ship Studio and STX Solutions and a dozen smaller companies from Loire-Atlantique are involved in software development, bringing their specific expertise and user perspective. The tool SSD [7] 'Sustainable Ship Design' is an LCA tool that measures the environmental impacts of a ship to evaluate the

Through this study, STX wants to find out if it is feasible in the medium term (approximately 5 years) to reduce the environmental impact of ships by 50 %. STX wants to halve emissions of greenhouse gas emissions,
improve
the specifications of the ship by an increased effort in design and determine the directions of future research and development.
The ship was conceptualized with vertical bows, interesting hydrodynamics, using alternative energy for propulsion provided by the veils covering an area of 12.440 m² on 5 masts, and natural gas for the operation of the generators providing the power of the ship and the production of hot and cold.
5. EXAMPLE OF ECO-DESIGNED BOATS, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE ENTIRE LIFE CYCLE
5.1 EOSEAS
With the cooperation of the company Stirling Design International, STX France launched the study of an eco- designed cruise ship capable of carrying 3311 passengers and 1089 crew members (figure 4).
EOSEAS®, a pentamaran 305 meters long and 60 meters wide,
is a concentrate of environmental developed by STX France in Saint-Nazaire [6]. proposals
