NEW APP PROVIDES UP-TO-DATE INFORMATION ON DIABETES MANY OF US object to people texting while we are talking to them. That may be even more offensive when a doctor is checking his cell phone while examining a patient. However, in some instances phone applications, also known as ‘apps’, can be very helpful and are becoming doctors’ best ‘friends’ when it comes to patient care. One cell phone application that has been released by Johns Hopkins not long ago may be pivotal to patient care. Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is enlisting smartphones in the clinical setting with an app that contains a real-time, point-of- care information technology (POC-IT) diabetes guide. In the United States, nearly 24 million people have diabetes, and 5.7 million of them don’t even know it. Long-term complications of the condition can be avoided or managed successfully through proper

care. According to the most recent figures released by the International Diabetes Federation, 366 million people in the world had diabetes in 2011, and by 2030 this number will have risen to 552 million. The highest prevalence of diabetes in the world is in the Middle East region, including six of the world’s top ten countries for prevalence of diabetes. Physicians, nurses and other healthcare providers can now have some of the most up-to- date information on the growing diabetes epidemic at their fingertips, thanks to the new Johns Hopkins guide to the disease. The POC-IT Diabetes Guide is a portable, easily searchable and quickly navigated resource written by Johns Hopkins physicians to help providers — particularly during patient visits — make the best clinical decisions. The guide provides real-time, evidence- based advice on everything from diabetes management to complications to medications. The
