ARAB HEALTH 2012 ISSUE 2 FOREWORD 003
OPTION FOR CHILDREN? SHOULD BARIATRIC SURGERY BE AN FIND OUT ON PAGE 20
As the conference and exhibition season gets underway for 2012, this issue of Arab Health magazine reviews some of the topics and hot issues surrounding the healthcare sector in the Middle East currently. On page 12, Dr Alaa Eldemerdash from Latifa Hospital in Dubai discusses the current status and future direction of neonatal ventilation. While mechanical ventilation is a life-saving therapy, its use in neonates increases the risk of lung injury and developing chronic lung disease. This happens particularly in extremely low gestational age neonates, for whom the incidence of chronic lung disease remains high. In addition, Abdalla Zarroug and Seema Kumar from the Mayo Clinic in the USA review the use of Bariatric surgery in adolescents. According to the World Health Organization, the number of overweight children globally under the age of five is estimated to be over 42 million. While the prevention of childhood obesity should continue to remain a global priority, certain treatment options should also be considered for a select few patients. Bariatric surgical intervention has proven, in certain cases, to be effective at curbing obesity-related health problems for these children in the short and medium term. With Africa Health, the sister event to Arab Health, fast approaching
us for the second year running, check out the special feature on page 34 of this issue. As an emerging market in the field of healthcare, Africa has many unique issues that need addressing and many companies from further afield are turning their attention to this fascinating continent with a view to expanding their businesses and health-related contacts. I hope you enjoy this issue.
