Here’s a peak at Rosso’s opulent offerings, the amazing building and a taste of the delicious menu...

front to back) and we headed to our table, a lovely circular booth. Upon recommendation of the manager, we opted for the Catarratto Sicilia wine which provided a lovely citrus burst and intense dry ending. It was a great accompaniment to our meal.

As I had prepared in advance, I narrowed down my choices and we placed our orders. I am very much a people watcher, it’s a favourite pastime, and while waiting for our starter the significance of the date occurred to me. It was 29th February – this was the day that women can propose to men. With that, we saw our first proposal of the night and thankfully he accepted. Helping to set the scene there was also an excellent live singer (Rossos has one every night apart from Friday and Saturday) who was charming us with some rather romantic numbers.

After the excitement of a leap year proposal, our starters arrived. A hearty and homely ‘Minestrone alla

Genovese’ and a wonderfully fresh

tasting

‘Fascinelle

di asparagi e prosciutto’ (asparagus with smoked provola cheese, wrapped and baked in parma ham).

I enjoy a good starter, and these were very good starters, but my taste buds were already ready and waiting for the main course. Our choices this time were two of my original options; the ‘Pappardelle con rag di coniglio’ and ‘Agnello con menta e pepperoncino’. The combination of pasta and rabbit proved too hard to resist, as did the option of a wonderfully succulent piece of lamb. Cooked rare to medium, this was a perfectly tender cut, beautifully marinated and complimented by chilli and mint on a bed of garlic spinach. Not only are the flavours perfectly balanced but it is also a delicious mix of textures and with a side order of basil mash to complete it, my taste buds were in overload. The pasta with rabbit was rich, also tender and extremely satisfying; another wonderful dish.

At a table opposite, a specially made cake arrived with the words “will you marry me?” iced on top. Successful marriage proposal number two. As our desserts also arrived, we began to discuss what you would do if someone said ‘no’ to a public proposal. The conversation dropped to a complete silence as we somehow managed to find enough room for our outstanding desserts; the ‘Torta formaggio’ (white chocolate cheesecake) and the ‘Cestino di limone’ (lemon tart with brullee top). A chocolate ice cream came with the former, a pomegranate sorbet the latter, both of which are home made and a perfect finish to our meal.

As our night drew to a close, we continued to talk to the extremely friendly and approachable staff. We collected our coats and reluctantly made our way to the exit and resumed the conversation that our desserts had so successfully interrupted. Just what would you do if you proposed in public and they said ‘no’…
