Emma-Lee Moss [Emmy the Great]
The frighteningly talented indie-folk heroine Emmy the Great (aka Emma-Lee Moss) is, despite being a mere twenty- something, a veteran of a scene that reveres her. Born in Hong Kong, she is now based in the UK and her debut record, First Love, was acclaimed in Europe and the US, being named one of The New York Times’ albums of 2009. This was followed by another success with her second
album, Virtue, as fans fl ocked to listen to her sweet, dreamy voice and thoughtful lyrics covering topics from the nature of femininity and Jungian theory to dinosaur sex. And she isn’t running out of ideas any time soon. ‘I don’t really need to go looking for them,’ she says. ‘They
come day to day. I don’t really feel like any idea is a bad idea.’ Emma writes prodigiously. ‘When I’m at home, I write,’ she
says. ‘The only reason I became a performer was to facilitate writing, really. And when I’m on tour, all I do is write and eat. I basically alternate between the two.’ Given an incredible young life and a penchant for penmanship, could an autobiography be in the offi ng? ‘Yes,’ she laughs. ‘It’ll be called I’ll Get Back To You.’
Emmy the Great will be performing on 1 July at Dinefwr Literature Festival near Llandeilo. emmythegreat.com
