July Dash down to Devon

Every summer I fi nd the allure of my home town of Brixham

in Devon irresistible. While it’s a classic seaside town in many ways (fi sh and chips, seagulls and shell shops), it’s when you

get away from the harbour that you really appreciate it. Start at Berry Head’s Napoleonic forts and follow miles of natural

beauty, from stretches of sandy beach to rolling countryside

and wonderful little woodland coves. At Kingswear, either

hop on an old steam train or take the short ferry across to Dartmouth for what I think is the best fi sh restaurant in

England – The Seahorse. The whole seabass grilled with a bit of lemon and rosemary is perfection on a plate. And if there’s a better scoop of ice

cream than that from Salcombe Dairy, then I’ve yet to taste it. Alex Mead, editor of Food and Travel Magazine foodandtravel.com

November FEEL THE HEAT IN MONTSERRAT The tiny Caribbean eminence of Montserrat is

synonymous with the volcanic eruption that buried half of it under ash. But don’t let that put you off – the other half of the island packs more than enough beauty and convivial old-school charm to keep the island’s fl ame burning. Find black-sand beaches, crowded rum shops and a heroic and irrepressibly infectious devotion to ignoring the big, hot elephant in the room. Tim Moore, acclaimed travel writer and author

August Live La Dolce Vita with kids

Sardinia. You just can’t beat it for sun and sandy, gently shelving beaches with

crystal-clear waters that are

just perfect for a toddler’s fi rst encounter with the sea. Stay in a villa with a pool or one of the excellent family hotels. Chuck in a few gelato artigianale and

you have the perfect recipe for a holiday with young children. I’ll be ignoring my own advice

this year, though. We’re packing our tent and cagoules, and

heading to Scotland for wind, rain and walking. Can’t wait. Family travel expert Chloë

September Skip winter in South America

Come European autumn, why not head straight into spring? A 12-hour fl ight from the UK

is Buenos Aires, where, from September onwards, the air

gets warmer and the jacaranda trees blossom. The city has its own nature reserve just south of the fl ashy Puerto Madero

district, where you can see 200 species of bird, including the wattled jacana, which seems to walk on water. Al fresco

steak dinners and street tango provide urban delights. Chris Moss, author of

Patagonia: A Cultural History (Signal Books, £12)

October Get loved up in Italy Autumn is a glorious time

to enjoy a sexy sojourn and end-of-season sunshine:

temperatures across southern Europe remain warm but the crowds have departed.

As other hotspots have shut their parasols and closed

their shutters, sun-drenched Puglia in the heel of Italy is as alluring as ever. Masseria Torre Coccaro is a historic

fortifi ed farmhouse close to the Adriatic, set in stunning

organic gardens. Antiques and original art make time in-room appealing, with a spa, Turkish

baths and local fl avours enough to coax you out. Sign up for a cookery class and take home

the tastiest souvenir of a little of Masseria’s culinary magic. Juliet Kinsman, editor-in-chief of mrandmrssmith.com

December Go wild in Kenya

Head for Kenya, where the conservation movement is

showing how a wildlife safari holiday can be something

exciting and memorable, while putting money in the right pockets. Naboisho is the fl ag

bearer: 50,000 acres of rolling, sunlit savannah where the two

great migrations of wildebeeste congregate (possibly why it also has the highest concentration of lions I’ve ever seen).
