First Words T
he outdoor industry is beginning to build up to trade show season with the likes of the Outdoor Trade Show (OTS) and Germany’s Outdoor Friedrichshafen putting plans in place for their 2012 showpiece events.
With retailers needing every opportunity to maximise margins, trade shows offer an excellent opportunity to negotiate deals and build relationships with suppliers that wouldn’t otherwise be possible. Whether an independent retailer, member of a multiple organisation or specialist, trade shows are a useful tool to inspect new product ranges, gauge market strength and chat to other like-minded individuals. The sociable side to these types of events is also an added benefit but that’s probably best left for you to investigate for yourself!
Other interesting news of note this month was the online sports retailer Activinstinct reporting the news of their recent consumer competition receiving over 200,000 entries.
The competition, marketed through a variety of Activinstinct’s social networking sites exemplifies how social networking is probably the most influential form of marketing around. For all retailers, the use of Facebook and Twitter for instance should be essential. For many retailers this may be common practice but there are still many I talk to who refuse to embrace new modern forms of technology.
The example of Activinstinct shows that you either use these new forms of technology or you get left behind. It really is as simple as that.
