Blinded By The Lights T

he origins of the Silva brand lay in a trio of Swedish orienteers inventing the liquid-filled compass. Orienteer Gunnar Tillander contacted the brothers Alvar and Björn Kjellström, who were also dedicated orienteers, and together they founded Silva. The year was 1933 and ever since then compasses from Silva have been a popular choice for orienteering and outdoor activities.

Although predominantly specialising in the outdoor market, the company has since diversified into the sport and professional industries. Product ranges now include headlamps, compasses, pedometers,

binoculars and professional instruments. The growth in multi-sport product areas prompted Silva to introduce their range of running headlamps to the market to capitalise on this boom. The range has now been established for 2 years and has proven successful with significant growth figures. “We have established a niche product for the outdoor market with great success,” says Silva’s Kevin Thomson. “With time becoming more and more precious as people lead ever busier lives, runners need the opportunity to go out in all hours regardless of light conditions outside”.

For early morning risers or after work running enthusiasts, Silva’s Trail Runner Headlamp features their Silva Intelligent Light distribution technology, combining a wide angle of flood lights with a long reach spot for peripheral and long distance running to keep users safe in the dark. The Trail Runner Headlamp weighs in at a feather light 135g of headweight and the Trail Runner Plus, designed for distance runners boasts an even lighter headweight at a mere 70g. Silva has kept the weight minimal on the head for maximum comfort when running. Other products in the headlamp range include the Silva X-Trail, X- Trail Plus and the Sprint that are designed for high-speed sports like mountain biking, trail running and adventure racing. The Silva Headlamp range offers significant benefits to retailers. With running accessories traditionally monopolised by brands such as Asics and Adidas, Silva offers sought-after variety to your shop floor. With

excellent product margins in time of economic difficulty, the Silva headlamp may offer a ray of light to retailers according to Kevin Thomson.

“If buying in bulk quantities, we offer excellent margins which can exceed 50%. In times of austerity such as we are currently experiencing, people are ditching their gym memberships in favour of cheaper alternatives like outdoor running. Our products enable people to do this whatever the time of day and so save valuable money by not having to invest in that annual gym pass.” With time becoming more and more precious as people lead ever-busier lives, runners need the opportunity to go out in all hours regardless of light conditions outside.
