Singer Mariah Carey joins Walt Disney Company President and CEO Robert Iger (right), Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Thomas Staggs and Mickey Mouse for the christening of Disney Fantasy
Ready for a Fantasy M
ariah Carey took on the role of Godmother for DISNEY CRUISE LINE’S newest vessel in New
York in a typically extravagant naming ceremony on March 1 before the ship moves to its permanent home base of Port Canaveral in Florida. The Disney Fantasy weighs in at 130,000 tons, like sister ship Disney Dream in 2011 but, unlike her fleet-mate, the newcomer has had a few tweaks to take account of the fact she is geared for 7-day Caribbean cruises as opposed to the 3 and 4-day versions of the Dream. Disney’s designers have therefore
changed the Dream’s lido-deck Wave bar to the Aqualab on Fantasy, an interactive water-play area for kids, while adding two small pools in the adults-only area forward on the ship and more canopy-covered deck space.
Inside, there has been a big change with the adults-only nightclub area, with the Fantasy’s version, called Europa instead of The District, having a hub-and- spoke design focused on a circular entry

bar with lighting effects designed to mimic a carousel. The new main nightclub will be called the Tube, and themed after the London Underground. Another change comes with DCL’s unique rotational dining system, whereby guests visit three different restaurants in turn for dinner, including the multi-media production of the 696-seat Animator’s Palate. A typical 7-day Caribbean cruise will see diners visit this restaurant twice, the first time for an interactive show featuring the animated character Crush, from Finding Nemo, while the second will feature a completely different presentation drawn from the audience. Diners will be given place mats bearing the outline of a human figure and asked to create a sketch within the outline, with the mats then collected and scanned. A computer will place three figures at a time next to familiar Disney characters in a unique animation effect. In unison, the passengers’ drawings and the characters will march and dance on the room’s 130 monitors, which should be a startling effect.
Other changes include an enlarged play area in the Oceaneers Club children’s room, new LED ceiling lights and two new big production shows in the main theatre, Disney’s Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular and Disney’s Wishes. Big fan favourites from the Dream, like the amazing Aquaduck ‘water- coaster’ flume ride over the main pool deck, impressive Atrium, Italian-themed Royal Court restaurant and the elegant adults-only Palo dining room will all be the same.
