AUSTRALIA

While we in the UK are all still emerging from hibernation, it has been a hugely eventful few months at the Society’s Australian branch. First, they

launched a new Society venue – a SMWS bar within The Royal Exchange private members’ club in central Sydney. As part of the collaboration, Society members may take up to two guests at a time to the venue, to enjoy its fi ne dining and excellent bar. Our antipodean cousins then threw

convention to the wind, with an innovative “expo-style” tasting, dubbed

“15 Steps to Heaven”. Members were presented with a choice of 15 diff erent Society whiskies to sample, and six tokens to redeem for a dram, to make sure no one over-indulged. Branch director Andrew Derbidge explained: “In this style of event, the members still got to sample six diff erent whiskies, but they got to choose which ones they wanted. It was a stand-up, casual

aff air, and a lot of fun.” Finally, in April, they will hold a beer and whisky Tasting at Sydney’s Malt Shovel

Brewery with Chuck Hahn, one of the

most well-known brewers in Australia. The event will see Society whiskies paired with the James Squire range of craft beers – an exceptional combination!
