A IS ALSO FOR AGE
FOOTBALL TEAM
MANAGERS, OFTEN SAY THAT ‘IF YOU ARE
GOOD ENOUGH, YOU ARE OLD ENOUGH’. THE SAME
ADAGE APPLIES TO SOCIETY BOTTLINGS. WE BOTTLE WHISKY WHEN IT IS READY. LAST YEAR, WE BOTTLED A 39-YEAR-OLD MALT FROM DISTILLERY NUMBER 35,
RATHER THAN WAIT UNTIL IT WAS A POTENTIALLY MORE
A is for… ADVENTURES
From the moment SMWS founder Pip Hills (see H) jumped in his car and travelled to Speyside to purchase his fi rst single cask of whisky, to the Society’s inventive tasting trips (see J for Jaunts), being adventurous has always been part of the Society’s DNA. This is a theme we have had a lot of fun
exploring in Unfi ltered – memorable moments include riding a Harley Davidson on the Isle of Lewis while visiting the Abhainn Dearg distillery; taking a whisky bar crawl through the streets of Tokyo; tasting some outdoor drams on top of a Munro with mountaineer and quadruple amputee Jamie Andrew; and sampling and skiing in the Cairngorms with Finlay Mickel (pictured), one of the UK’s most successful skiers. Lest you think we are simply gallivanting
around for the sake of it, there is method to our madness – quite simply, we believe it is important to be adventurous when it comes to exploring the full range of the whisky spectrum. So, next time your whisky collection runs dry, be brave, be bold and try something new.
