THECHAMBEROFSHIPPINGANNUALREVIEW2011–2012 OBITUARIES

WILLIAM MENZIES-WILSON, CBE Died 9 June 2011 aged 84

Bill Menzies-Wilson was President of the Chamber (formerly the General Council of British Shipping, or GCBS) in 1984. Educated at Winchester College, he joined the

army in 1944. On being demobbed in 1946, he read philosophy, politics and economics at New College, Oxford. He worked in steel with Stewarts and Lloyds in

the UK and Africa, but left soon after nationalisation to become, in 1972, Chairman of Wm Cory and Son. He rose to become Chairman of Ocean Transport and Trading plc. He was Chairman of the International Shipping Federation from 1982 to 1987. For his services to shipping, he was appointed

CBE in 1985.

PATRICK SHOVELTON, CB, CMG Died 20 January 2012 aged 92

Patrick Shovelton was Director-General of the Chamber (GCBS) from 1978-85. He joined GCBS from the civil service, where

he had worked in the Ministries of War Transport, Aviation and Technology, and the Department for Trade and Industry. As a Deputy Secretary at the DTI, he was in charge of the negotiations on air traffic flights between the UK and USA that led to the signing, in 1977, of the agreement that became known as Bermuda II. He was Director-General in the key years after

the Chamber and the British Shipping Federation merged. Staff numbers were reduced significantly during his tenure to reflect the changing needs of member companies, but in such a way that he never lost the support and trust of his colleagues. He went on to serve on the board of A P Møller and as Vice-Chairman of The Maersk Company, its UK container shipping subsidiary, from 1987-95.
