New entrant numbers Numbers of new entrants remain on track at present. The autumn 2011 intake was 693, with figures from January 2012 expected (as last year) to raise the annual picture to around 900. More than half the trainees are on foundation degree/ professional diploma programmes, which the MNTB Main Board had originally identified as a suitable industry target.


Technical work The requirements of STCW 2010 Manila amendments have meant changes to many of the MNTB short course criteria documents, which are used for training course development. This has created a considerable work programme for the Technical Committee, which is currently revising and updating the criteria. Of particular note is the new stand-alone Electronic Chart Display Equipment (ECDIS) short course document that is under development. The MNTB is very grateful for the efforts of its


Technical Committee members from the nautical colleges, universities, sponsoring companies, the MCA and trade unions in moving these important work programmes forward.


Onboard training This year has seen a major revision of the MNTB Training Record Books (TRBs) and the development of an innovative and unique DVD that showcases good practice in onboard training. Designed specifically to improve the training and retention of UK new entrant trainees into the Merchant Navy, the DVD describes and illustrates UK training programmes at sea. It focuses on the roles and responsibilities of the Company Training Officer, the Designated Shipboard Training Officer, the Master, the Chief Engineer and others onboard involved in supervising training tasks. Launched at the MNTB Annual Training


Seminar in November, the 30-minute DVD is now included with the TRB given to all new entrant officer trainees and ratings. Copies are provided to company training managers, UK nautical education and training institutions, and also to ships that carry and train UK officer trainees and ratings. It will shortly be available on the MNTB website to

ensure the greatest accessibility and use by all involved in the training of UK seafarers. Companies have already welcomed the DVD, and the MNTB will monitor its use and effectiveness in improving programme retention rates over the coming years.


New developments The MNTB provides a host of services to the industry as a whole, not just to Chamber members. Its expertise is highly regarded and sought after in matters to do with seafarer education and training. This position is currently being capitalised upon through two exciting developments. The first is the establishment of a job referral service for newly qualified officers, a small number of whom have difficulty in securing their first job at sea. Whether this is to do with timescales, uncertainty about job opportunities or lack of confidence in approaching potential employers, the job referral service will help. The service will explain recruitment sources, and offer tips for writing applications, CVs and interview techniques. The second development is to provide an MNTB


commercial training course ‘recognition’ service to training providers. Courses that meet MNTB good practice guidelines for course provision will be able to use the MNTB name and logo as a kitemark signifying exactly that. This will give shipping companies greater confidence in making decisions about the suitability of a particular course.
