Maritime Labour Convention The Chamber has worked throughout 2011 with the MCA and the maritime unions, Nautilus International and RMT, to develop proposals for implementing and ratifying the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) in the UK. This has resulted in the resolution of some difficulties that might otherwise have afflicted operators of UK-registered ships. For example, the convention requires that all seafarers, including trainee officers, be accommodated in single-berth cabins on non-passenger ships, instead of the dual ones frequently used at present. Chamber members feared that they would need to reduce the numbers of trainees they recruited if they were unable to provide single-berth cabins for them during the sea phases of their training. The Chamber

and Nautilus developed a substantial equivalent allowing companies to manage the demand for trainee berths, while guaranteeing decent accommodation for trainees. The 12 new ratifications of the MLC over the past

year mean that only eight more are now needed to trigger its entry into force. The Chamber hopes that the UK will be among the first 30 ratifiers, as this will allow our operators a full 12 months to prepare for its introduction. The MCA arranged a series of seminars for shipowners to help them to prepare for the MLC, in which the Chamber has actively participated.
