has examined that cable. If users fi nd a cable without a manufacturer’s mark, or without the specification or standard number, this should be rejected. It is a common misunderstanding that a cable is compliant because it has a ‘BS’ number on it – any supplier can put a BS number on a cable, it does not mean it is has been independently tested. If it is BASEC-approved, it will say ‘BASEC’ on the cable. Never accept completely unmarked cable. Unfortunately, it is often

not until cables are installed, tested and used that the issue comes to light, and by then it can be too late to avoid the enormous cost of rectifying

the situation. If you have installed cable and a problem is discovered on the system testing, for example, seek advice as soon as possible. You can contact BASEC on cable quality issues, or your trade body on the installation aspects. Keep all records of purchase, including reel ends with batch markings on, receipts from wholesalers and any other sales records on your computer system. If you have any scrap lengths, these can be sent to BASEC for checking and testing.

Approved Cables Initiative

Up to 20 per cent of cable product in the cable systems supply chain is unsafe, non- approved or counterfeit

BASEC is one of many industry supporters of the Approved Cables Initiative (ACI) www.aci.org.uk. Its approach is to be proactive in identifying the source of unsafe, non-approved or counterfeit cable in the supply chain through investigating unscrupulous importers, manufacturers and distributors who are not complying with their legal duties under UK regulations. It also aims to educate anyone who sells, supplies, or installs cable to know what cable markings to look for to ensure it is compliant and to report any suspect cable to the ACI. BASEC supports the ACI by handling technical and non-technical enquiries, and testing cable samples suspected of being faulty, non-approved or counterfeit. ■ Copies of this card are available from the ECA and BASEC.
