Corporate Social Responsibility GRIMALDI FORUM MONACO Facility Strengthens Sustainability Commitment G

RIMALDI FORUM MONACO IS ONCE again raising the bar on its commitment to sustainablemeetings and corporate social

responsibility. The facility has become a member of the

Green Meeting Industry Council (GMIC), the pre- mier global community solely dedicated to pro- moting sustainability in the meetings and events industry. Entirely focused on advancing sus- tainability in the meetings industry, GMIC main- tains member representation in more than 20 countries. And on the corporate social respon- sibility side, staff members remain very involved in an effort to re-forest and clean a part of Margherita Island in the Bay of Cannes. Being a green-meetings leader is nothing new

for Grimaldi Forum Monaco, where numerous ini- tiatives undertaken over the past fewyears make it easy to hold meetings with environmental stewardship in mind. In October 2008, the facil- ity became one of the first convention centers in Europe to obtain ISO 14001:2004 certification. An August 2009 audit confirmed that the build- ing’s environmental management system is up to standard, allowing it to remain ISO 14001: 2004–certified on a permanent basis. Three tailored green-meeting solutions are

now available to Grimaldi Forum Monaco clients. The “Paperless Meeting” solution minimizes paper usage and involves eco-friendly printing, as well as recycling as much material as possi- ble. Compensating for the ecological impact of events is the mission of the “Carbon Neutral” solution, with offsetting occurring through a sus- tainability programsupported by the Foundation Prince Albert II. A“360° Green Event” permits meetings to be

as close to 100-percent green as possible. Besides incorporating the “Paperless Meeting” and “Carbon Neutral” solutions, it entails utiliz- ing recyclable signage and carpeting; opting for eco-design stands stocked on site; choosing menus based on seasonal regional produce; and optimizing selective waste-management efforts in cooperation with the facility’s field specialists. Grimaldi Forum Monaco also has involved its

suppliers in its green initiatives, so as to operate in line with a coherent, dynamic, overall environ- mental policy. For the most-polluting event-indus- try materials, such as carpeting and tarpaulins, Grimaldi Forum Monaco seeks suppliers to which it can provide materials for recycled or recycla- ble products. For example, Reversible, a French company, receives printed PVC banners and signs, and re-uses them to create urban bags and design objects. Want to hold a sustainable meeting, but not

sure where to start? Grimaldi Forum Monaco’s “Act Green” team helps to plan green events; plan- ners need only send an e-mail to actgreen @grimaldiforum.mc to initiate the green-meet- ings planning process.
