RSNA Annual Meeting Is a Success, Technically Speaking

EVENT: 96th Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). RSNA’s membership base is made up of more than 44,000 radiologists, radiation oncologists, medical physi- cists, and related scientists from around the world. 2010 MEETING (NOV. 28– DEC. 3): While attendance at RSNA’s Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting dipped from 58,795 delegates in 2008 to 56,824 delegates in 2009,

figures for 2010 suggest that participation is on an upswing. The event drew 58,044 attendees, and more than 700 technical exhibit booths occupied 452,000-plus square feet of exhibit space at Chicago’s McCormick Place. “RSNA 2010 was a highly successful meeting in several regards,” said Steve Drew, RSNA’s assistant director for the Scientific Assembly and informatics. “Professional attendance was up, sessions were extremely

well attended, we had more than 100 first-time exhibitors, and exhibitors were very pleased with the attendance in the technical exhibit halls.” CHALLENGES: RSNA wanted to extend the programming’s overall appeal to other disciplines. Offering more networking opportunities was an additional goal for the 2010 meeting. INITIATIVES: New program- ming twists included 90-min- ute workshops addressing topics that were late- breaking or controversial, or required in-depth analysis, such as exploring the use of imaging biomarkers in clinical care and research. Some of these sessions started at 7:15 a.m., giving attendees the flexibility to take advantage of as many workshops as possible and earn additional continuing-education credits, without sacrificing time on the exhibit floor or missing other sessions of interest. Two sessions at RSNA 2010 were held in conjunc- tion with different medical societies — the European Society of Radiology and the Chinese Society of Radiology. At the Lakeside Learning Center Bistro, “Lunchtime Discussion Topic Tables” included facilitators from the American Board of Radiology and RSNA. n
