Bottom hand near shoulder height.

Princeton junior attacker Jaci Gassaway throws a few fakes to keep goalies guessing on shots around the crease

>> WHAT I DO

EAT TIGER FOOD

We always have a big pregame meal as a team in the cafeteria. I usually just get a bagel. I also belong to Cottage, which is one of the Princeton dining clubs. They have great food. About half the girls on the team are in Cottage. My favorite is Quesadilla Night. It’s every Wednesday, and they bring in a chocolate fountain.

EVOLVE

I wasn’t always an attacker. I started as a defender, and my high school coach moved me to attack. I do like scoring goals. When I’m shooting, I don’t really think about the goal, though. If you over-think, you’ll mess up.

HIT THE BOOKS

I’m a psychology major, and I’m pre-med. I’ve always wanted to go to medical school. I just wrote a paper on sports psychology, relative to gender, on how playing college sports leads to the empowerment of women.

My 2012

Goals I want to get a left hand,

and I want to be more of a leader, more of a voice on attack. As a team, we want to win the Ivy League championship and regular season, and get farther along in the tournament than the quarterfinals.

My Hero(ine) I love DJ (Princeton assistant

coach and former U.S. World Cup team captain Michele DeJuliis). Our entire team looks up to her. She has a lot of good advice. I never played behind the cage before, and she told me to try playing behind, because I’m 5’9”. Now I love using the crease to my

advantage. Michele DeJuliis

>> TIME-AND-ROOM SHOOTING TIP

At Princeton, we’re coached to keep our top hand lower than you might expect. It took me a while to get used to it, but it gives you more power. For this grip, put your hand on the shaft’s logo. Don’t do it if you have a defender nearby or you’ll get back checked.
