Convention Wisdom: Play it Again
Not among the 7,000 participants at the 2012 US Lacrosse National Convention, presented by Champion, in Philadelphia Jan. 13-15? You can still learn from it. US Lacrosse secured Digitell to shoot
video of all presentations at the convention, and those video files are now available. Visit
uslacrosse.org/2012convention for a schedule and instructions on how to download sessions hosted by Virginia men’s assistant coach John Walker, Northwestern women’s head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller and other experts in lacrosse coaching and officiating. Each file costs $20. US Lacrosse included free unlimited access to all sessions, including demonstration videos, in the registration price for convention attendees. The US Lacrosse National Convention will return to Philadelphia Jan. 11-13, 2013.
US Lacrosse Awards
Equipment Grants US Lacrosse has named 196 lacrosse programs in 29 states and the District of Columbia as recipients of head-to-toe equipment through the US Lacrosse Equipment Grant Program. Now in its 13th year, this annual program has provided equipment to almost 500 fledgling lacrosse programs at an estimated value of $2.2 million since its inception, thanks in part to contributions from US Lacrosse members and donors and to donations from STX, Cascade, Lax World, deBeer,
Lacrosse.com, Gait, 6M Sports and Maverik. The 2011 grant recipients will receive their equipment prior to the start of the 2012 spring and summer seasons.
In addition to local teams and leagues, 100 of the award winners are schools that will utilize these grants to introduce lacrosse into their physical education curriculums in 2012.
Register for Events US Lacrosse will host four youth events
in June and July. Registration deadline for the US Lacrosse Regional Championships is March 15. Regionals are June 1-3 in Phoenix, Ariz., June 8-10 in Arlington, Texas, and June 15-17 in Raleigh, N.C., and they’re open to all boys’ and girls’ teams at the U11, U13 and U15 age divisions. The top four U15 teams at each regional will advance to the U15 National Championships, July 24-29 in Orlando. Register at
uslacrosse.org/2012regionals.

USL Campaign:
Minimize Injuries, Maximize Fun
By Paul Krome
US Lacrosse wants to arm athletes, coaches and parents with tips to minimize injury risk and maximize their lacrosse experience in 2012. Lacrosse fans will no doubt recognize
the brother-sister combo of Stephen and Kelly Berger as the hosts of “Concussions in Lacrosse: Signs, Symptoms and Playing Safe,” a video produced and distributed by US Lacrosse. Kelly Berger has been a longtime player in the U.S. women’s national teams program and is the head coach at UMBC. Stephen Berger is the men’s game manager at US Lacrosse and a five-time Major League Lacrosse all-star now with the expansion Charlotte Hounds. The video anchors US Lacrosse’s concussion awareness web page (
uslacrosse.org/concussionawareness) and is a key component of a 2012 campaign that will emphasize a different safety- or sportsmanship-related theme every three months. First up: concussions and commotio cordis, a rare but potentially catastrophic phenomenon that results in sudden cardiac arrest. “We’ll work with the US Lacrosse staff
and our colleagues in the women’s game to let the lacrosse community know that there are numerous resources available that could help educate all stakeholders

about safety and sportsmanship issues,” said Angelo Calvello of Woodridge, Ill., chair of the US Lacrosse men’s game safety subcommittee. “For example, a coach could show his or her team the 10-minute US Lacrosse concussion video to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of concussions.” The campaign largely will pull from
existing materials developed by national organizations like US Lacrosse and its Sports Science and Safety Committee, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Positive Coaching Alliance, the National Federation of State High School Athletic Associations and the NCAA. Future topics will include hydration and sportsmanship, among others. “The US Lacrosse website is a
terrific resource, loaded with all types of educational content from articles to interviews to videos,” said Liz Piper, women’s game manager at US Lacrosse. “We want to get that content from the cyber world to the real world so coaches, players and officials can benefit from the research they fund with their US Lacrosse membership dues and donations.” For more on concussions and commotio cordis, visit
