5 Players to Watch Amanda Lockwood Milton (Ga.)

country team, Lockwood led the Eagles with 51 ground balls and 79 draw controls. The Vanderbilt-bound middie also chipped in 48 goals and 12 assists.
Sydney DuPre Episcopal Houston (Texas) The speedy senior midfi elder was a fi rst team All- American, All-State and All-SPC last year. Kris Coppolino Winter Springs (Fla.) Coppolino had a breakout year in 2011,
leading the Bears to the state title game and tallying 145 points (72g, 73a). The senior attacker has signed to play at UMBC.
Mackenzie Smith Vero Beach (Fla.) Praised for her stick work and vision, the senior attacker led Vero Beach with fi ve goals and four assists in the 2011 state title game. An honorable mention All-American, Smith tallied 45 goals and 30 assists last year. She will join Lockwood at Vanderbilt.

Sydney Dupre Spotlight On…
Episcopal Houston (Texas) Mike Donnelly, the Episcopal Houston boys’ coach the past seven seasons, takes over a
team that has been on the doorstep of a state championship. Under former coach Regan Bosch, now an assistant at the University of Southern California, Episcopal beat St. John’s in their conference title game only to see St. John’s to win the state title weeks later. Last year, St. John’s beat Episcopal by one goal in the state playoffs. Donnelly said he will have to tweak his zone defense approach. “You can play zone in girls’
lacrosse, but it’s totally different,” Donnelly said. “You can’t stay in front of the goal because of shooting space. It’s going to change pet defenses and things I like to do.” Donnelly, a Long Island native, has seen the talent evolve in Texas. “If my team gets better, their team gets better,” he said. “Elevate your game according to the competition.”

>> SOUTH By Robbie Levin
1. Vero Beach (Fla.) The Fighting Indians (22-0) lost seven players from
last year’s state championship squad. Gunning for its seventh consecutive title, Vero Beach will lean heavily on seniors Mackenzie Smith (Vanderbilt), Olivia Long (Johns Hopkins) and Gracee Hendrix (Virginia Tech).
2. Milton (Ga.)
After not losing a single starter, Milton (19-1-1) remains the top team in Georgia. Midfi elders Amanda Lockwood (Vanderbilt) and Heather Harman (Penn State), and attackers Annie Ruland (USC) and Lydia Cassada (Northwestern) pace an offense that’s scary good.
3. St. John’s (Texas) After a shaky start, the Mavericks closed out 2011 on
a 12-1 run. This year, St. Johns (18-8) will rely on a stout defense led by Alexa Mullins (Stanford) and a speedy midfi eld that includes Sarah Urdahl and Amanda Leavell.
4. Westminster (Ga.)
The Wildcats (21-1) have lost only two games over the last two years, both to Milton. With leading goal- scorer Eve Knapp returning, Westminster is the clear A-4A favorite.
5. Cy-Fair (Texas) Fourteen seniors return for last year’s
Texas runner-up. The Iron Maidens (16-2) bring back four 20-goal scorers and veteran goalie Natalie Weitkunat.

8. Apex (N.C.)
Apex dominated North Carolina last year, scoring at least 14 goals in every game. The Cougars (20-0) lost a lot of their offensive fi repower, but they return all- conference attacker Katie Burnet (Longwood).
9. Hockaday (Texas)
The Daisies won 10 of 11 last year before falling to St. John’s in the state semifi nals. Maggie Fobare (Northwestern) will lead Hockaday (17-5) in its quest for a third state title in fi ve years.
10. Sacred Heart Academy (Ky.)
The Valkyries (17-4) lost to Kentucky County Day twice but beat the Bearcats when it mattered most, in a thrilling, 13-11 double-overtime state championship game. Sophie Ford, Kentucky’s Defender of the Year, returns with midfi elder Olivia Solomon, who fi nished third on the team last year with 20 goals and 14 assists.
6. Winter Springs (Fla.) Winter Springs took a step forward in 2011 with its
fi rst state championship game appearance. If the Bears (19-5) want to knock off perennial power Vero Beach, they will need signifi cant production from senior attacker Kris Coppolino (UMBC) and senior midfi elder Kelly Garrett (Liberty).
