St. Ignatius coach Chris Packard said McGovern (41g,


31a) is “custom built to play at X.” The All-American senior midfielder has drawn comparisons to Virginia’s Steele Stanwick for his ability to dissect defenses.


Zack Fixen Palos Verdes (Calif.) The Maryland-bound senior midfielder and All-American


had 28 goals and 17 assists last year. “He has a great shot on the run with either hand and can run all day,” Palos Verdes coach Jimmy Borrell said.


Brendan Gaughan La Costa Canyon (Calif.) An imposing 6-foot-4, 195-pound


attacker, Gaughan buried 48 goals and added 31 assists as an All-American. The Michigan recruit “draws more and more attention each


spring,” La Costa Canyon coach Jesse Foss said.


Jack Bobzien Arapahoe (Colo.) Bobzien, a senior attackman, returning All-American and


Hartford commit, “is a natural born leader with that innate ability to make his teammates work harder and play better,” Arapahoe coach Guy Cerasoli said.


Sean Doyle Torrey Pines (Calif.) Doyle, an All-American who is committed to Cornell,


finished with 50 goals and 42 assists last year. Said Torrey Pines coach Jono Zissi: “Doyle is a fearless, hard-dodging attackman with a knack for the goal.”

St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.) St. Ignatius Prep has become a model of success for West Coast programs. The


Wildcats boast at least seven Division I recruits in Chad Cohan (Duke), JW McGovern (Yale), Will McKee (Lehigh) and Peter Doyle (Princeton), Matt Emery (Virginia), Charlie Ford (Georgetown) and Spencer Evans (Harvard). Junior midfielder Chad Bell and junior defenseman Jack McGovern Jr. also will get Division I attention. “The Jesuits schools have a saying about building young men and women for others, and


[former coach] Dave [Giarrusso] built a program on these principals, combining lacrosse’s brotherhood — and the original hubris of the sport for Native Americans becoming warriors — with being a competitor and a man for others,” St. Ignatius coach Chris Packard said.


6. Regis Jesuit (Colo.) The Raiders (18-1) won their first Colorado state title

1. Kent Denver (Colo.) The Sun Devils (12-5) hope to avenge their loss to Regis


Jesuit in the state championship game last season. They are led by Virginia recruit and U.S. U19 team member Matt Florence, who was an All-American last season.


2. Torrey Pines (Calif.) The Falcons look to build off a strong finish last year,


when they won the CIF-San Diego Section Division I championship after entering the tournament as a fourth seed. Torrey Pines (18-5) will be potent at attack with Sean Doyle (Cornell), who had three goals in the title game against Poway.


3. St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.) [See Spotlight.]


4. Coronado (Calif.) Coronado (20-4) is in title-defense mode after


beating Cathedral Catholic in the first-ever CIF-San Diego Section Division II championship game. Reis Stanley (Dominican) should shine in goal, while Hunter Corpus (Air Force) and George Bailey (Tufts) anchor the midfield.


5. Mercer Island (Wash.) Coming off their fifth Washington


Division I state championship, the Islanders (21-2) will look to second team All-State performer Connor Bernal (22g, 14a) and Zach Stickney (13g, 5a) to lead them to title number six.

in four attempts with an 11-10 victory over Kent Denver, avenging their only regular season loss. Ryan Ball returns after scoring five goals, including the game-winner, in the championship game.


7. Foothill-Orange County (Calif.) The Knights (18-4) capped an impressive 2011


season with a 19-5 victory over Mira Costa in the CIF- Southern Section championship and again will be a threat thanks to an experienced senior defense highlighted by Alex Keuilian and goalie Teddy Ochiai. Brad Bochesa leads the attack.


8. Monte Vista Danville (Calif.) Monte Vista Danville (18-6) is primed to


defend its NCS championship with a cast of talented players. Gus Gradinger, Cameron Parsons, Sam Langon, Andrew Simor, Jack Pedersen, Austin Richardson are all expected to make solid contributions.


9. Lincoln (Ore.) The Cardinals (22-2), in the hunt for


their fourth state championship in five years,


are loaded with talent. Michael Marcott (Denver), who scored 59 goals last season, paces the offense, while Chris Nye (Providence), Grant Clifford (Dominican), Spencer Rotenberg, Andrew Dalke (Hartford) and Jake Marcy (Oregon) round out the balanced attack and midfield.


10. Cherry Creek (Colo.) Cherry Creek (15-3) will try to topple Regis Jesuit for the


state title with a well-balanced team. Top returning players include Mesa College recruits Kendall Williams and Ryder Clark, along with Charlie Wurzer and Seylor Skudneski, both of whom are headed to Jacksonville.
