Hong Kong depart 15:56 (11mins late). 21:56 local time) It’s funny to think that the construction of Hong Kong’s Chek Lap Kok Airport was started and finished in less time than it took for the planning application for the third runway at Heathrow to be turned down.


HKG It’s a lot less hairy than the old


Kai Tak airport, which was closed in 1998. With skyscrapers and mountains to be concerned about, you had to aim for a chequerboard then turn right to land on the runway that jutted into Victoria Harbour. January is the tail end of the typhoon season, so flying in to HKG can still have its challenges.

I am using my new watch 24-7 and I continue to be very pleased with the C60. My one request would be for more luminosity on the GMT hand. The main reason is that when I need to rest on the aeroplane I often share what is really a cubby with another pilot. I can’t turn the light on to see the time, as I might wake my colleague, so more luminosity would be welcome. Also as I stay in so many hotels, I


can’t always immediately find the room light or know how to put it on. The 4,480m, nine-hour flight is a regular trip for me. Mumbai is interesting time-wise as it is four and half hours ahead of London, which makes calculating the time difference that little bit less simple. The monsoon season in midsummer certainly makes the airport “slippery when wet”. We stay at a hotel near the airport and use the train if we want to go to the centre of Mumbai as the road traffic is so bad. Right at the end of the runway is a huge shanty town. It’s always an odd feeling to roll past such a place in a $1 billion plane, but you see so many contrasts in India.

After all these years flying I don’t think so much about the time zones anymore. Although in theory the 24 standard time zones are designated by meridians 15° of longitude apart,


there are pragmatic variations on the ground. Here in Mumbai the time change is +5 ½ hrs. I adjust the bezel 30 mins to show the correct time. It saves turning the watch upside down, which is what I have done in the past! So far, I am very, very pleased with my Christopher Ward C60. I think it will be covering quite a few thousand miles with me. I am not missing my Citizen with the broken face at all.

I am impressed with the range of watches Christopher Ward now produces. While I am constantly using the GMT aspect and diveproof facility of the


C60, I have to say I also love the clean retro look of the C8 Pilot MkII. And indeed the C11. Oh, I can’t decide. I’m spoiled for choice!


I wonder if they can design one with the retro looks, GMT features, waterproof, shockproof. And in carbon/titanium so I don’t have to take it off every time I go through airport security.
