Ischgl

Where is it? Tirol, Austria Why go? High, snowsure slopes, lively après

Ischgl’s ski area is high for the Tirol, with all the slopes except the runs back to the resort above 1800m and most runs in the local sector facing north-west, so snow stays in excellent condition. And there’s lots of snowmaking too. Après is very lively, starting on the mountain

“I must, I must improve my pole thrust,” says Sue

and moving to numerous bars and clubs in town later on. The resort is famous for its opening (in November) and closing (in May) parties which are held outdoors and feature big name bands. Roxette starred at this season’s opening party and Katie Perry has appeared in the past.

Deer Valley

Where is it? Utah, USA Why go? Great slopes, skiers only

the most upmarket of the town of Park city’s local ski areas – you can stay in luxurious hotels or condos near the slopes or in town. the resort loves pampering its guests – there are valets to unload your skis, plus gourmet dining, immaculately groomed slopes, limited numbers on the mountain and no snowboarding allowed. the slopes suit all abilities and there’s great ungroomed terrain for experts. Linked to Switzerland ischgl’s slopes are linked to those of the duty-free village of samnaun in switzerland and most runs are wide, well-groomed and ideal for intermediate cruising. there are plenty of tougher red runs for more of a challenge too. Experts can enjoy some genuinely steep black runs and plenty of off piste and powder that doesn’t get tracked out quickly. the lift system is very modern, with 80 per cent of the main lifts being gondolas or high-speed chairs.

Great terrain park ischgl is a top place for freestylers. the snowart park is huge and one of Europe’s best – 1600m long, always well maintained and with lines for beginners, more advanced jibbers and pros.

But… > Village has an urban, glitzy feel. > not ideal for beginners. > Bleak in bad weather. > après can be a bit tacky.
