“I felt needed and appreciated. I feel I have a special

duty to contribute.”

Austin vascular surgeon Phillip Church, MD, spent two weeks last fall treating American

soldiers wounded in Afghanistan and Iraq at the Army’s Landstuhl Regional Medical Center (LRMC) in Germany. Dr. Church says his volunteer work taught him “the level of dedication, professionalism,

and courage of our soldiers. They know the danger they’re in, and they accept injury as part of the job.” It was Dr.

Church’s third time to volunteer, but it won’t be his last. “I plan to volunteer at LRMC as long as there is a need and I am able.”
