Chief Executive Officer Louis J. Good- man, PhD, put it in his foreword to the book, “This book gives you the opportu- nity to step into the shoes of a dedicated third-generation physician and to see the changing nature of health and medical care through his eyes. This physician of over thirty-seven years is sharing his col- lected writing for a better understanding of why medicine is a profession and not just another business.” Dr. Tenery, former chair of the Ameri-
can Medical Association’s influential Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs, says of the medical profession: “It’s not just about the science. It’s also about its people — the doctors, nurses, allied professionals and the support staff who dedicate their lives to caring for the sick and injured. While facing the demands of an exploding patient population, com- pounding technological advances, and increasing funding constraints, these individuals are being forced to push the limits of the core principles upon which this profession was built.” He notes that the “likelihood of out-
comes and cost/benefit ratios are the driving forces that are ‘depersonalizing’ this noble profession. These changes did not come from the failures in health care delivery, but from the successes. While the literature is filled with historical docu- mentation of the breakthroughs and discoveries of the science, there has been a paucity of collated information that studies the evo- lution of the delivery
side of medical care. My hope is to put the history of these subjects at the read- ers’ fingertips — just a click away. “ The book outlines the evolution of
the various aspects of health care deliv- ery — the changing role of the physician, liability, marketing, managed care, orga- nizational representation, health care reform, and more. It explores the founding principles
laid down by past generations of physi- cians and why these tenets are still im- portant today. This introspective search into the history of health care gives one insight as to not only what those prin- ciples are, but also the whys. Writing is nothing new to Dr. Ten-
ery. He wrote an ethics column for the monthly AMA publication, AMNews, for nearly a decade and previously published Dr. Mayo’s Boy: A Century of American Medicine, which chronicles the medical careers of his grandfather, fa- ther, and himself over the last 100 years. Through anecdotes, he points out the changes in medicine and the constants that serve as the underpinnings upon which the medical profession was built. In Search of Medicine’s Moral Com-
pass is only available in ebook format because of its low cost, easy accessibil- ity, and portability. It is now available on electronic reading devices through their ebook library.
Foundation cites new major donors
The TMA Foundation (TMAF) named four new major donors for 2011. State Rep. Susan King and Austin
King, MD, of Abilene, have been active within TMA and the TMA Alliance for many years and donors to the founda- tion since 1997. Their generosity quali- fied them to become major donors in 2011. Each is deeply involved in im- proving the lives of others through civic, religious, professional, and community groups. Dr. King, a past member of the TMAF Board of Trustees, currently serves on TMA’s Board of Trustees. Representa- tive King, who represents District 71, is director of Elm Place Ambulatory Surgi- cal Center in Abilene and trained as a
