ICD-10 will change your practice, expert warns


Implementation of the International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Revision, other- wise known as ICD-10, will be the most significant change in how physicians do business in more than 25 years, a nationally recognized practice manage- ment consultant said. “ICD-10 cuts across the entire spec- trum of medical practice,” Dennis Flint, director of consulting and education services for Complete Medical Solutions, told attendees at Texas Medical Associa- tion’s Winter Conference in Austin on Jan. 28. “Everywhere an ICD-10 code hits is going to have to have an action plan.”


Complete Medical Solutions is a Lou- isiana-based software company special- izing in practice management software, hardware, consulting, and education. Mr. Flint said ICD-10 will include nearly 70,000 codes, including 480 dif- ferent codes for a fractured patella. He also pointed out that there are separate codes for various animal bites depend- ing on whether the patient is bitten by a parrot, macaw, chicken, turkey, or other animal.


He said implementation of the new codes, set for October 2013, will almost certainly result in a drop in productiv- ity in physician offices and an increase in claims denials. ICD-10 is clearly an opportunity for insurance companies to not pay claims, he said, warning physi-
