Sleep soundly with a Med diet
If you suffer from sleep apnea—a condition when breathing arrests for short periods during sleep—you also may experience daytime drowsiness. But new research published in European Respiratory Journal suggests your diet could offer relief. In a recent study, 40 obese individuals afflicted with severe sleep apnea increased physical activity and ate a Mediterranean diet (rich in fish, olive oil, fresh vegetables, and whole grains) or simply “ate prudently” for six months. Those who focused on exercise with the Mediterranean diet lost significantly more weight, reducing symptoms of sleep apnea. Another perk? The Med diet is delicious! –Jenna Blumenfeld
for your colon Colon cancer is the third most common cancer worldwide, with more than 1 million new cases recorded annually. But a recent meta-analysis of 25 studies offers good news from a healthy breakfast staple: whole-grain cereal. The review of more than 2 million subjects found fiber from whole grains greatly reduced colon cancer risk; in fact, with every 10-gram daily fiber intake, the risk dropped by 10 percent. Look for cereals with ingredients like whole-grain oats, brown rice, barley, and whole wheat to reap benefits.

Happy 100th, Bragg! If you’re a health food fan, it’s likely that your pantry contains at least one Bragg Live Foods product, such as the iconic unfiltered apple cider vinegar or liquid aminos with the vivid red-and-yellow labels. This year, the Bragg company celebrates 100 years of promoting health through organic foods—a legacy seemingly immune to the market’s clamor for the “next big thing.” Patricia Bragg, the company’s effervescent evangelist, shows no signs of slowing down. “I love being a health crusader,” she says. “All over the world, we help create healthy people living a healthy lifestyle. And this is what that is: You are what you eat, drink, breathe, think, say, and do.” Having introduced 365 products during the past century, the Bragg lineup now focuses on the raw cider vinegar, flavored vinegar drinks, extra-virgin olive oil, salad dressings and marinades, liquid aminos, sprinkle seasonings, and a digestive supplement. All are USDA Organic, gluten free, versatile, and delicious. Bravo, Bragg!
