Neverland brought to class G

O

2 Learn, the initiative that celebrates the skills of the UK’s best secondary school teachers, is again inviting teachers across the country to help create Britain’s biggest classroom, by building an online video library of the best revision lessons.

Building on the success of the 2011 programme, UK teachers can once again take their top lessons beyond the four walls of their classroom to share them with secondary school students, aged 13-18, everywhere. Teachers can now upload video clips of their showcase lessons to www.o2learn.co.uk, which will give them a chance to win from a prize fund of over £150,000. Every teacher who uploads a lesson will also receive a mobile broadband starter pack, as a thank you for their effort in creating their online lesson.

reat Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity is urging teachers across the land to sprinkle a little fairy dust, think lovely wonderful thoughts and take part in Peter Pan Week 2012 which takes place from Monday 27th February to Friday 2nd March 2012. To register simply visit www.peterpanweek.co.uk

Throughout the week schools are encouraged to transform their classrooms into Neverland and get pupils involved in all kinds of exciting Peter Pan-themed activities such as dressing up as their favourite characters from the story. The charity hopes to raise £62,235 from the week to fund parent and family accommodation at Great Ormond Street Hospital which enables a parent to sleep next to their child or stay nearby.

Children's BBC SMART presenter Kirsten O'Brien said, "I find Peter Pan fascinating and I wish I had the chance to take part in something like this when I was a kid. It's such a creative way to get children engaged in such a great cause.”

Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity has conjured up some top tips to help teachers bring Neverland to their classrooms for this year’s Peter Pan Week. They can be found at www.peterpanweek.co.uk

In recognition of Britain’s most inspirational teachers, over the course of the programme the website will ask students to rank lessons after they’ve watched them – putting the power in the hands of the pupils to decide which the best lessons are, and which teachers should be rewarded for their efforts. Weekly prizes of £2,000 will be awarded every Monday from 20th February 2012, with half going to individual teachers and half to school departments directly. The last winning video will be announced on 26th November.

At the end of the year, the winners of the weekly award will be entered for consideration for the annual awards. O2 Learn will assemble a panel of education experts to review and assess each lesson and create a final shortlist of nominees. Pupils then get their final say on who they believe to be the UK’s most inspirational teacher, with the winner and two runners up to be decided by a combination of public voting and the expert panel. This year schools will benefit on an even bigger scale, with a portion of the prize money allocated towards funding a major development project to benefit pupils, for example renovation or creation of new classrooms, or improving the school’s computing facilities.

The O2 Learn 2012 winner and their school will be awarded £45,000. The first runner up and their school will receive £22,500 and the second runner up and their school £12,000.

Randstad Education’s CSR initiative helps children in the UK and Africa A

s part of their proactive CSR commitment, Randstad Education’s Global Skills Share programme in partnership with the VSO, is already having a significant impact on the lives of children, not just in Africa but here in the UK too. The Global Skills Share programme gives primary teachers or education managers the opportunity to volunteer through the Voluntary Service Overseas programme, as teacher support officers in Ghana. Randstad Education’s sponsorship is critical because it provides supply cover to the successful applicants’ schools free of charge for the full period of their placement.

Miriyan Sikkens, teacher at William Davis Primary School in London is the second teacher to embark on the programme and has recently departed for Wa in Ghana. Her three month placement involves working with teachers and children across several schools in the Upper West region, which is acknowledged as one of the poorest regions of the country. She is documenting her experience through an informative and visual blog which can be viewed at http://miriyansikkensvso2012.blogspot.com/ Randstad facilitated social media training for Miriyan prior to her departure which will enable

her to confidently blog her experience and most importantly engage the children in Ghana with the children at William Davis Primary School in London, enabling them to build meaningful relationships with both educational and personal benefits.

Alison Helm, assistant head teacher at Curwen Primary School in London has recently returned from a similar placement in Ghana where she instigated a literary programme initiative that Miriyan Sikkens will be able to continue. This gives school children in Ghana the opportunity to use laptops for the very first time and Miriyan will send their letters to the children at William Davis Primary School, sharing the differences and similarities of life at school and at home in Ghana.
