Wide ranging review of European education published

A

seminal book on European Education by distinguished contributors aimed at counteracting the decline of language education in the UK, as well as providing a new pedagogical framework.

A new book “Schools for the Future of Europe” will be launched at a seminar in Oxford, on March 8th exploring the emergence and application of European education through a series of high profile contributions from top level writers including the distinguished Prof. Frank Furedi and Prof. Hugh Starkey. The volume reviews what Churchill called “Europeanism” for schools, together with all the various initiatives that have been set up to counteract monolingual restrictions. This is a topic of particular importance in the UK, given that language education continues to fail.

Edited by two Trustees of the English Trust for European Education, Lynn Erler and John Sayer, both Research Fellows at the Oxford University Department of Continuing Education, the book provides a starting point for discussion not just on this issue but on the future of education and will be of interest to teachers across the board.

According to Baroness Quin, former Minister for Europe, the book is “A thorough and detailed review of European educational initiatives together with interesting insights from a variety of contributors ... with emphasis on the economic and cultural benefits - both for individuals and for countries - of learning foreign languages...”--

Learning made fun! 3

P Learning is the global leader in online mathematics for school aged students with its flagship learning platform, Mathletics, used by more than three million students worldwide. The Mathletics learning platform also includes a game engine which allows students from around the globe to compete live against each other in answering mental arithmetic questions.. 3P Learning is also the creator and host of the World Education Games, the world’s largest free web-based, annual learning event, enabling students of all ages from around the world to compete in a variety of games. The World Education Games will be taking place from 6th- 8th March 2012, and will involve World Maths Day, World Spelling Day and World Science Day, which are all free to enter for schools. The philosophy behind the games is to get students around the world as excited about maths, spelling, science and writing as they do about sport. It also helps to unite students around the world and makes learning a fun experience! This is a hugely popular event with 5.5 million students expected to take part from over 200 countries. Everybody can achieve and by providing a positive experience, we hope to repeat the success of the games from last year. Registration is now open, so please go to the website and start practising! We are also inviting all schools participating in the World Education Games to unite together in support of UNICEF’s School-In-A-Box program. A donation of £150 to UNICEF is enough to purchase a School-In- A-Box – a learning kit which gives around 80 children the opportunity to start school. This has an immediate, tangible impact in poor communities, and can be replenished year after year. You can find more information about this on the games website.
