Interiors, Refurbishment and Maintenance

New thinking afoot T

here was a time (quite recently in fact) when flooring for schools never strayed from grey. Even a muted blue was unusual. But that has all changed.

Comment by Danielle Ashton, PR & Advertising Specialist, Altro

Recent new build and refurbishment projects for schools, colleges and universities have pushed the boundaries with fantastic results. There is no technical reason why slip resistant, easy-to-clean flooring has to be grey or blue. A whole host of colours are now available, opening up new opportunities to create educational environments that work much more effectively for both students and staff. The most exciting projects we have encountered recently are those where clever choice of colour and bespoke design have been harnessed. This has included everything from bright, stimulating combinations of colour, to shades and textures that echo a natural, outdoor environment. The latest wood-effect safety flooring is also being used to excellent effect to create welcoming and friendly spaces without the traditional downsides of real wood.

The latest digital printing technology has also brought bespoke design within the reach of educational budgets. There have been a number of highly successful projects in which emblems and uniform colours have been reproduced in flooring to foster a sense of shared values and ‘belonging’.

Boring grey flooring really is a thing of the past for today’s schools.
