What’s your competition like now compared to when you opened your doors? It has changed from local stores to supermarkets and the internet. The number of supermarkets, other chain stores and online retailers selling under cost has diminished, but the margins are still very tight on the big releases. They’re heavily discounted from suppliers’ unrealistic RRPs. I think the VAT law change in the
Channel Islands will help to keep prices realistic when it is hopefully introduced.
It’s a tough time for indies. What role can an independent retailer play in today's games market? The role has not changed but has probably become more relevant as the number of retailers decreases. We provide friendly expertise and knowledge to customers, as well as value
for money and bespoke bundles to suit customers. We’ve seen a marked increase in this as some customers struggle with the complexity of gaming.
What are your hopes for 2012?
That suppliers phase the roll out of games throughout the year. Too often we are left with blank months. Also, there are several clashes of major game
releases within days of each other. [Publishers] are not maximising their revenue potentials on sales or helping us push them better.
